| jt1013's Full Review: Nursing Profession |
There is a shortage of nurses. That is a given. I have a large amount of respect for LPN's. My sister is one in Kentucky. She has been one for 32 years. She does not want to become a RN. She said that in her hospital, EMT's are being utilized for caregiving. They can do almost all cares accept pass meds. They will begin to chart soon, she said. She believes that the hospital may be trying to phase out LPN's. This may or may not be true.
Hospitals want to give the best care with the least amount of overhead. I saw staffing ratios constantly changed in the early and mid-nineties to legally add additional responsibility to already overworked nurses. They did this to satisfy administrative's concern about rising costs and legally abide by Title 22. I remember my former manager reacting angrily when I told her that I could not stay past 18 hours in our night shift ICU. In a different ICU,I cared for a patient that was on CVVH, ventilated, etc. that required two nurses to one patient. Guess what,I was the only nurse. The supervisor claimed that she had contacted over 50 nurses without success. You might ask why she used up so much energy contacting nurses who wanted time off instead of a registry. The overhead issue of course. Pizza was bought for our ICU unit the next day as a token for our hard work.(Other nurses had very sick patients as well) Two days later, I committed a terrible error.
Two years after the ICU nightmare, I found my niche, home health. I loved patient teaching. This particular company was the first time I had experienced true teamwork where all worked for the patient collectively. The utmost professionalism was found there with mutual respect for each nurse. There may be other areas of nursing that others may prefer over homehealth. I loved maternity nursing in college but did not go into it because I made a C in college. I went into ICU straight out of nursing school. Our professor would grill us in front of doctors. We had to know as much as they did especially about hyperbilirubinemia.
I still love nursing also but need to work on getting my revoked license back in the next few months.Unbelievable stress at home and work with understaffing contributed to my two mistakes.
