I'm using a Velodyne CT-120 12" powered subwoofer in my 'flagship' home theater hook-up. I decided not to go completely overboard with the subwoofer. I was looking at the EarthQuake Supernova for a whooping $1200! I decided to invest more money into my...
Pros: Tight, controlled Bass, clarity is amazing! Cons: May be a bit too much for those who like their Home theatre Quiet ;P
When it was time for me to upgrade to a serious Home Theatre, I had heard from friends to demo the Velodyne series.
I took their advice, and went to try to find some, which I did after a few days. A quick note on demo-ing these subs, and any...
Pros: Efficient vented design, relatively easily to balance with rest of system Cons: Not as accurate as the very, very best (and much more expensive) subwoofers
Subwoofers...ah.....
...way back in 1982 (when subwoofers were an esoteric, tweaky audiophile item; the term was unknown in the mass market) I was first introduced to Velodyne. A grad school classmate had a ULD-12 (a classic, early Velodyne)...
I have recently added a Velodyne CT-120 to my home theater. This Sub produces a serious amount of bass. From outside my house at half volume I could hear the beats of a techno CD. This is not a toy it is for serious home theater application. The bass...
Pros: the windows rattled!!! Cons: the neighbours called
After my mom (an opera singer and teacher) had her CD player stolen she cruelly took my beautiful sound sytem away from me, a teenager!!! So to make up for it, when we bought a new computer, she bought me this subwoofer and speakers so i could play...
Excellent value for excellent sound by jkdeible ,Sep 06 '04
Pros: Excellent value, tremendous punch, clean sound Cons: No remote makes adjustments tedious
As happens from time to time, I went to the store to spend a good deal less on a subwoofer than I did in the end. When I heard the CT-120, I knew that I must have it. Since there was a slightly scratched-up floor model going for about $425, I even got lucky on the price.
The CT-120 provides more clean, accurate, low-end than most home users will ever want. This model is not made anymore, but you can still get them over eBay if you don't mind paying for shipping. Set it up with some good bookshelf speakers (I use Polk Rti6's) and you will be pleased.
I have to agree with a previous poster that the quality of the original recording makes a huge difference. If I listen to classic rock on digital radio, I end up turning the CT-120 up or down on every other song. A remote would have been good, since I have to reach behind the sub to adjust it directly; guess I'll end up buying an EQ one of these days.
