Ton Kiang: Dim Sum by San Francisco's Best Slave Labor

by Mr.Eyore Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Dec 15 '01
Pros: Tasty, tasty grub. No filler. Comfortable, if spartan, environment.
Cons: You should feel guilty eating here.
If I was any kind of real man, I‘d stand by my convictions, and here I go, about to not stand by two of them, maybe more. The first is that I’m reviewing a restaurant that’s already been reviewed very well by someone else. But this’ll...

Dim Sum . . . And More

by ATOM , May 12 '00
Pros: Nice place to take your friends and family and get to use a Lazy Susan. And you'll have to read on for the BEST REASON to go here.
Cons: Can be really crowded and the food is good but not great. There's one reason you go. Read on.
Dim Sum . . .

Beautiful, Beautiful Dim Sum.

It was kept from me for 22 years, but when my college friend introduced me to this weekend brunch tradition at the China Royal Restaurant behind the Saint Louis airport, I was converted....

Empresses and Emperors Feast Here

by jay_martin , Feb 08 '00
Pros: fresh, tasty Hakka cuisine; best in City; clean, good service
Cons: none
Ton Kiang (5821 Geary Boulevard, cross street 22/23rd Aves) offers the best all round Chinese dining experience in San Francisco. The chefs capture the freshness and texture of the very best in Chinese cooking while the wait-staff takes care of your...

Why I don't like Ton Kiang

by dpwang , Apr 17 '00
Pros: well known, good atmosphere
Cons: little food, price
I know Ton Kiang is a lot of people's favorite restaurant, but I just don't see it. I've been there several times, and every time I leave, I feel like I could have gotten a better meal somewhere else. They don't have a lot of food for the price. We...

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!

by foodcritics88 , Jun 24 '02
Pros: Relatively clean
Cons: VERY RUDE AND STINGY OWNERS. GREASY FOOD.
STAY AWAY! We spent a total of 600+ for lunch for 30 ppl.At the end, the waitress asked if we want deserts. We thought it was included(most Chinese rest. give deserts free for large parties) but when the bill came it wasn't. The waiters tried to take off...

Come on guys! we live in SF!

by f00dl0v3r , Nov 02 '03
Pros: good place for non-asian people who don't know what real Chinese food is.
Cons: rude, expensive, small portion, stuck up, no parking, POOR DIMSUM SELECTION
I don't understand why people are giving them such a good review. You guys must've been from some Hill Billy town in Tennessee or something. I mean come on guys, we live in San Francisco!!! You should know WHAT QUALITY FOOD IS. Ton Kiang might be a good p ...

TON KIANG

by PCROMWL3 , Mar 17 '00
Pros: Great food
Cons: Parking
This is one of the best chinese restaurants in the bay area.
I go to the one on Geary St. near 21 ST Avenue. One of the
great dishes is Oyster Beef w/ tofu, and some of the dim-sum they serve.
They have this chinese speciality, Shark Fin...

Good for non-Asians.
by psychocats ,Oct 05 '03
Pros: Bilingual staff.
Cons: Overpriced food.
The food is okay. The prices are too high. What's the appeal of this place? If you're not Asian and you feel uncomfortable going to places where people speak Asian languages (Chinese, in this case), Ton Kiang is perfect for you. The wait staff is always friendly, and they're bilingual, telling you both in English and Cantonese what each dish is, as they come by. Dim sum has never been better for the "gwai lo."

If you're Cantonese, though, stay away from this place. You can get much better deals in Chinatown.

food not worth the obnoxious attitude or rude service
by toughcookie2 ,Nov 13 '05
Pros: Adequate food
Cons: Over-priced menu; long lines; differential treatment of customers that border on discriminatory; bad parking situation
Despite the Zagat 2005 rating, I will not go there again. Food was adequate but portions were small and prices were high. On top of it all, the wait's too long, and differential treatment of customers is too obnoxious. It also helps that it's tough to find parking....
