Pros: Stable, cheap, fast Cons: Pain to set up, power hog, needs good RAM, runs hot, misc. quarks
I purchased the Tyan Tiger S2460 as a cheap multi-processor AMD Athlon solution that I can use for daily use as well as power-user functions. I looked at the cost of powerful single-processor based Athlon and Pentium 4 (mostly Athlon based Soltek, Asus,...

Went in, fired up, ran flawlessly.
Seems to be very fast, very stable, and didn't seemto run as hot as I would have expected with Althons.
W2K loves it,especially SERVER.
Best board I've used to date.

Easy to setup, and performs very, very well. When comparing cost/Benefit of a dual Xeon solution, this board totally rocks.
Don't even think about putting a promise IDE raid controller on this board, because it will not post and will not work!!!
Both 64 bit slots run at 66 Mhz. It would be nice to have one of them running at 133 mhz to fully take advantage of a SCSI Ultra 320 controller, but the Utlra 320 controller still runs drives very, very fast at 66 mhz.

This is all about power!...
by rogerpjr_dt3000 ,Jun 14 '02
This is all about power! I'd recommend using the boxed (retail)cpus with AMD approved fans. DON'T CHEAT THE CPU. Once set up with a good 300 watt min power supply (another must) you'll do fine. Make certain you have an adequate case mid-sized cases should do the trick, though for my money you'll want a slightly larger mid-sized case.
Works with dual Durons and XPs too. This combo AMD Tyan is just AWESOME. ROCKS. STABLE. RUNS FOR MONTHS w/no reboots. The boxed series of cpu from AMD again is perfect for this application. For the price of a good board you can get a DUALIE. ;)
ps this is my 12th system built with this mobo combo. 6 with AMD MPs, 6 with various cpus from Durons to XPs. Regular Athlons need not apply from what I've seen. WIn XP, WIn 2k, Linux wok well. Actually sees and reports the dualies from Duron,XP to the MP. By the way if using the Duron AMD you MUST use the Palimino core Duron which includes all Durons from the 1.0 gig up. All XPs to my knowledge work. ;) ;)

This is one of the greatest boards I've worked with as a tech. The board posted right away, no problems, and the Win2000 install went amazingly well, everything detected properly. It is very fast and reliable, supporting a G-Force2-MX and SIIG Raid. It has been running as the server in an internet cafe I own in Florida.
