Not what it should be

by omne24 , Sep 30 '06
Pros: Looks fantastic, and has the name.....
Cons: Far more expensive than it is worth. High cost to maintain. Very, very finicky.
Steinway, what a name. Shrouded in mystic and held up as the standard in pianos today. But the truth is...that's just good marketing. When you sit down and compare the "D" to it's counterparts, Bosendorfer, Bechstein, Petrof, and yes, even Yamaha, you ...

The choice of Horowitz, Rachmaninov, Rubinstein, Kissin et al.

by borvisbogdanov , Apr 06 '03
Pros: The finest of fine concert pianos
Cons: doesn't come with bar fridge
With the exception of Richter (who chose Yamaha pianos!), every great pianist of the 20th century chose Steinway D concert grands for their recitals and concertos, and almost exclusively as practice instruments too. Whether we look at current greats...

Simply the best sound available

by Erich_Zann , Dec 08 '00
Pros: Outstanding craftmanship and sound
Cons: There are no cons -- this is the best piano in the world
Steinway isn't the most preferred piano by concert pianists for nothing -- the truly make the best piano's available today. Having spent many years playing Steinways in general, and always eagerly awaiting the next time I could play a model D, I can say...

The finest instrument available

by schroeder360 , Jul 21 '00
Pros: Everything. How could over 90% of artists be wrong?
Cons: Extremely expensive. This size grand is for concert stages only.
I do not personally own this piano. However, I have played on so many of these, I feel more than qualified to give my opinion of them.

Whenever I have the opportunity to perform somewhere, I always take a sigh of relief when the piano is a...

20th century vs19th century Steinway Concert D's

by funzone2 , Nov 19 '05
Pros: 1927- Easy to perform, bright, brilliant orchestral 1867- A piece of artwork
Cons: 1927 Too easy to perform. 1867 1s hard action tunes 1/2 step down
I own a full restored Black 1925 Steinway Concert D which sits in my music room and a fully restored 1867 Solid Rosewood Steinway D (which is a couple of inches shorter) that sits in my main family room. I have a love affair with both of them. The 1927 ...

The Best Money Can Buy

by nicksavage , Jul 14 '01
Pros: Its touch and tone are superior to all pianos and cheaper than Bosendorfer.
Cons: Nothing.
This is clearly the best piano money can buy. The wood used to make a Steinway sits out in a lumber pile from six months to a year to reduce its moisture content (other companies kiln dry the wood because it is quicker). The case is made out of a...

The best instrument God has given

by holtomsteinway , Jun 28 '08
Pros: Amazing sound, wonderful craftsmanship, outstanding feel
Cons: . . . I guess the price could be a con
I am a very new and inexperience musician , but I know a good piano when I play one. Steinway pianos are completely made from solid wood. They are not made with chipboard or veneers that compromise the sound causing the instrument to sound ...

Steinway Model D

by rachmaninoff45 , Aug 27 '02
Pros: Everything, This Piano is perfection
Cons: Nothing
This piano is one of the best that I have every owned. I own 3 of these beauties and nothing can compare. I also own 2 Bosendorfer Imperials. They are close to match. But I would chose my Model D over anything else. I have played on countless Steinways...

Steinway's are great!

by fuzal , Jun 02 '02
Pros: The sound is superb and they look great.
Cons: they are very big.
In my opinion Steinway's are the best piano on the market. They sound great and are beautiful to look at. You can't beat a grand and a Steinway is by far the best. The only problem for a Steinway 'D' is that is is very big. It wasn't a problem for me...

Steinway or Boesendorfer?

by arato , Nov 30 '03
Pros: The joy to choose
Cons: The torture to choose
I am currently in the process of buying a concert grand. Testing other possible brands plus the idea of a sound investment narrows the search down to the classical Steinway or Boesendorfer question. As pianos need about two years to develop their full ...

19th century craftsmanship that shoudn't be lingering in the 21st century
by mvsmann ,Jun 02 '06
Pros: Name on the fallboard.
Cons: In consistent action, craftmanship, sound. Not an industry standard anymore.
I've tried many Steinways so far, and they all have quite terrible quality control. Four out of Five "new" pianos in the dealership room need action adjustment. This is outrageous!

I played on 3 Steinway Ds, and all had some loose part in the action and needed work. If you try some Yamahas or Bosendorfers, you never find such problems in the new piano. If you can find such obvious problems in the dealer showroom, imagine what you'd get after owning them. I am not even sure if soudboards would be glued properly as I find some zinging sound in the D model, which costs nearly 100 grand!

Those pianos used by professional pianists are made and maintained differently than the ones consumers buy. Unless you are a concert pianist who can get special attention by Steinway techs, stay away from Steinway brand and get other fine pianos such as Bluthner, Bosendofer, or even Yamaha. They are far better musical instrument made to satisfy music lovers of 21st century.

Pros: Tone, Touch, Range, Beauty
Cons: The loan!
This is the most awesome piano in the world.Incredible touch mechanism, amazing tone, it is a fabulous musical instrument. Very expensive @ 90k but still a lot cheaper than Bluthner, Bechstein or Bosendorfer.

Tremendous range and volume of sound. Simply an incredible work of art.

Hamburg Steinway "D" Even Better than the American Product
by urourogyn ,Nov 29 '06
Pros: The Hamburg is the Quintessential Perfect Piano with No Equal in Sight
Cons: Cost
Steinway has two factories for Model "D" production -Long Island City, NY and Hamburg Germany. Both pianos have their many attributes however,I feel the workmanship of the Long Island Factory has slipped noticeably in the last 10 years. My Hamburg "D" is perfect in every manufactoring process including the standard glossy finish which costs an additional $15,000 in America. I bought my D right before (May 2003, $79000, American dollars with the exchange) the Euro ascended to its current heights. My piano has marvellous construction and more or as importantly sound production like a Stradivarius violin. A richly deep bass but a three dimensional treble with a quicker action than the American version. If you have a choice play both and many will pick the Hamburg. I will soon but on YouTube my playing three Chopin Etudes on my baby under Serge Marinkovic MD.
