Foveon Technology and the SD9

by antonio777 , Dec 05 '03
Pros: 10.2 Megapixel resolution, natural aesthetic to the images, Excellent build quality, AC adapter for indoors
Cons: Not for low-light, iso 200/400 are noisy, Requires two sets of batteries
The Sigma SD9 is a specialty item for those seeking the highest quality images who are willing to work with limitations. The Foveon sensor of the Sigma SD9 offers a resolution higher than other 6Megapixel DSLR's but the camera suffers from lack of ...

Best Value in Digital SLR's

by edwinmharris , Jul 25 '05
Pros: unmatched image quality, rich color, images scale well for poster output
Cons: noise high at ISO 400, AF too slow for sports, no built in flash
The Sigma SD9 when used properly, produces the most colorful and three dimensional pictures I've seen in a camera under $4,000. Getting the best pictures requires skill with exposure and a familiarity with the camera, but many exposure errors can be ...

Will give any Nikon or Canon a run for their money

by ucsbgaucho , May 17 '05
Pros: Image quality, resolution, sharpness, price of camera, lens selection, X3F technology, battery life
Cons: Lowlight noise, anything other than iso 100 isn't great, but that's it
I've had the SD9 for almost 2 years now, and I am completely happy with my choice, considering the cameras this one compares with in terms of image quality are at least 3-4 times as expensive. Don't be fooled by those who think if you aren't using Canon ...

Needs improvement
by rricky ,Dec 11 '03
Pros: Very Sharp images. Excellent for capturing solid objects. Foveon Chip
Cons: Not recommended for portraits. Only saves to raw format. Yellow cast on images.
The sigma camera has the distinction of being the only
digital camera that is currently using the Foveon X3 Pro 10M chip. The technology delivers sharper
images than most digital cameras. Moreover you can make prints as large as a1 from the sd9 files. Although you can take sharp handheld shoots with this camera, the handling of this camera is not very user friendly when compared to cameras like the Nikon D100 and the Canon 10D. This is important cause you want to hold the camera as still as possible when shooting so you can get sharp images.
The Sigma's SD9 gives all your portraits a yellow cast.
It also does a poor job of capturing denim.
plus it's noisy at iso above 100. Sigma is the only company that make lenses for this camera so your options are limited.

Great images
by ptlpc ,Jan 04 '06
Pros: Images with fantastic detail
Cons: RAW only, white ballance issues, poor integration with flash.
As an SLR the SD9 is not a point and shoot by any means. I have had the camera for over 2 years and have made some fantastic images with it.

It is an excellent camera for:
Landscapes
Still Life
Some portraits (studio)

I do not recommend it for:
Event Photography
Any application needing a flash
Photo journalism
Candid shots

The main drawbacks are that the camera only shoots in Sigma's RAW format (no jpeg or tiff). This means you have to use their software (which is quite good) to "develope" the image. This is usually fine for studio and landscape type work but really impacts the workflow on event style photography and photo journalism.

Some people have issues with the white ballance and an occasional yellow cast. Others have not "seen" this with their SD9. I have seen it and it is an issue. Proper white ballance tecnique can help minimize this.

I'll only briefly mention the flash issue since this is a Camera review - however they work together right? Well, I have not had any luck getting consistant results with a flash (Sigma's) and this body.

SD9 needs to have more then just a raw image format .
by pmbfilmsinc2 ,Oct 08 '04
Pros: When the images come out they are beautiful and sharp when shot at 400.
Cons: This camera is only capable of shooting in raw format which creates less images.
This camera body is well made and other then the controls being a little bit hard to manage for people with large hands.
