If you've got a hankering for Mai Tais, the scent of plumeria, and swaying palm fronds and grass-skirted hips, I would recommend checking out the Pleasant Hawaiian Holiday's site at www.2hawaii.com.
Last May, I booked a package vacation through this site and was generally pleased. It's a very well-designed site that allows you to price and book your entire itinerary including air travel, rental car, and hotel in one stop. Unlike other sites I investigated, this site gives you total flexibility in planning your trip. You can choose any range of dates (even up to the day before the departure). You can select from a number of airlines, including Delta and United, and a broad array of hotels (photos of which are included). You can even book multi-island sojourns.
When you're done, the site instantly prices your itinerary, and you can opt to buy at that time. A package including round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to Honolulu, rental car, and five nights stay in an economy class hotel cost my girlfriend and I around $1150. This was a couple of hundred less than a similar offering by Sunquest, and much less than what I could have cobbled together on my own.
Just a couple of caveats:
Don't be too miserly when selecting your hotel. In retrospect, I wish I had paid the couple of hundred more for one of their "supreme" or "deluxe" class rooms. While our economy class room was clean and featured a great lanai, it lacked the charm you want when attempting to cultivate romance in paradise.
DON'T go the the free breakfast that Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays offers. As you can guess, this breakfast is just one long sales presentation designed to induce you to purchase various day excursions. The whole affair hearkens back to all those bad 80s timeshare inducements.
