Both times I went to Oahu, we stayed at Outrigger Hotels, and this month when we go to Kauai, we will stay at an Outrigger as well. This is a really good hotel chain to stay at, and they offer the Entertainment Book rate, which offers prices that are unbelievable!
The first time we went, we stayed at the Outrigger Hobron, which I believe now has been changed to the Ohana Hobron (Ohana is a branch of the Outrigger chain) It is further away from the center of Waikiki than most hotels, but it right near the Ilikai hotel (you may recognize it from Hawaii 5-0), and the Hilton Hawaiian Village. It is about a 2 block walk to the beach, which isn't bad for an economy hotel. The rooms were immaculately clean, the bathrooms were tiled and clean. They have safes, coffee makers, some with refrigerators. You can have a city view, building view (ha) or partial ocean view (pretty far away tho).
I really liked the walkway leading up to the lobby; very "Hawaiian" looking; water on each side with lily pads and fountains. There is a sundry store and a restaurant at the entrance, as well.
The second time we went to Waikiki, I used the Entertainment Book and we stayed at the Outrigger Coral Seas (also an Ohana hotel now). This wasn't as nice as the Hobron, but it was in a GREAT location; Lewers Street, which is one block from the beach, and adjacent to luxury hotels such as the Halekulani. The room was small, but clean. And the great thing is that we had a lanai!
The lobby isn't fancy, but there is a coffee/ice cream shop in it, and a jewelry counter. There is a restaurant right next door, and an ABC store---what a surprise--ha ha!
We paid a whopping $36 per night for this hotel! That was 50% off the regular room rates, using the Ent. discount. And the neat thing about the Outrigger chain is if you are staying at one, you can use the facilities at any of them.
Hopefully this will give you a little insight, and for as little as you are in your room, it is worth it to stay in a budget property and have extra money to spend on something else.
