I found out about the so-called secret entrance a few years ago...way before I was planning a trip to Paris. I am so glad I did. Whether or not it's really a secret, I'll never know, but it did save us a good 2 hours of waiting in that long line outside I.M. Pei's pyramid.
The pyramid is neat, sure. Look and be dazzled, but DO NOT get in that line. Especially if you arrive once the crowds have already begun winding their way into one very long wait. It will appear that this is the only way in, but do not be fooled! There is another entrance down the street at 99 rue de Rivoli. Commit this to memory, my friends. You'll be so glad you did.
In very small, gold numbers on the side of the wall on rue de Rivoli you will see "99" and there is a door. It is hard to see and seems numerically out of order. We missed it several times and almost gave up (so don't do that, you will find it.) Go in this door. Follow everyone else (and the signs) and you will soon find yourself BELOW I.M. Pei's pyramid. This is the real "line" to buy tickets to get in. Sure, you may still have to wait 20 minutes to get your tickets, but all those folks up above you will have to as well...after they've waited 2 hours to get through that glass pyramid.
Another quick tip. Go use that nice, clean bathroom at McDonald's before finding the secret entrance. There are NO public restrooms outside the museum. Have a great time!
