Although most tourists come to Madagascar for its natural history and culture, Nosy Be is one place that is more like an idyllic tropical island. There are several tourist hotels that are filled with European tourists who have only a passing interest in wildlife. However, there are many interesting sights to see for the nature lover.
Black lemurs are easily seen at the nearby island of Nosy Komba (and perfectly happy to pounce on any bananas you brought with you!). There is also the island of Nosy Tanikely with great snorkeling and some trees with giant fruit bats. On Nosy Be, there is the Lokobe reserve where you can also see black lemurs in the wild (i.e. unaccustomed to tourist bananas) and lepilemurs. We took canoes (pirogues) to get to the reserve, but watch out if you take these. Sometimes the waves can splash over the pirogue and hit your camera equipment so be sure to take plastic bags.
Another word of warning is on the Air Madagascar flights. The Nosy Be to Antananarivo flight can be heavily overbooked, and it helps to have a Malagasy guide who can argue your case when you're trying to get on these flights.
