THE XFL BEGINS PLAY ON NBC!
The first XFL game between The Las Vegas Outlaws and the New York-New Jersey Hitman is a marketing success, but is it a visual feast which will leave me returning week after week to gorge on football until I am well over filled?
It is still early, But I am not sure for how long I shall graze at this Football Buffet. The production of the XFL leaves a little to be desired.
The XFL took a different approach, seeking to make the football action up close and personal, they included more steadycam operators, these people run all over the field and bring us up close pictures, as if we were standing somewhere along the field. The traditional NFL approach gives us a few other angles, mainly from along the sidelines, as if the ball was directly in front of us at all times. Here in the XFL we get the above field angle, as if we are hovering about 15 feet above and behind the offense. I really dislike this angle. This angle makes it harder to see where the ball is going, and the amount of yardage picked up. I seriously hope they scrap these points of view, the camera just doesn't catch up to where the ball is going quick enough, so everyone looks relatively small when making a catch downfield.
Interviews: The on field interview happens right away. Cameramen and reporters can run right out onto the field to ask questions like "What does it say on the back of your shirt?" Yes, this brings up the point that the players can put anything they want to on the back of their shirts, rather than stick their name there.
Introductions:
You know that stupid point where each and every player has their picture and where they are from? Monday Night Football took it to a new level of stupidity with using only a picture of half the players face as they introduced themselves and said where they are from. But that filmed introduction was done at an earlier time. The XFL takes the camera right onto the field, as the players are about to get going and play. Before the first series of plays, the home team all lines up and goes through their names, where they are from or went to school, and of course, they give their shout outs to their peeps, and say other nonsense when you run across some punk. This takes time, as you have to go through all 11 players on the field, but you just can't put a price on the value of giving a shout out to your baby's momma.
Shut up and get to the cheerleaders!
Are they HOT? Are they Sexy?
Ummm... yeah.
Are they featured?
Not as much as I would have thought they would have been. The advertisements and the buildup towards the beginning of the XFL led us to believe the cheerleaders would really be an integral part of the XFL experience.
But how are their outfits?
The XFL cheerleaders DO appear to be well trained in the art of stripping, or erotic dance.
However, in direct comparison to the "Juggies" of The Man Show fame, the XFL cheerleaders are covered more, and in general, are not "shaking what their mommas gave them" nearly as often as the Juggy dancers. But like the Juggies, the XFL Cheerleaders can be found dancing in the aisles of the stadium. That's pretty cool! No need to keep them down on the field.
COMPLAINT!- They need to STOP flashing the advertisers names directly across the faces and chests of the cheerleaders! This is a disservice and I REFUSE, YOU HEAR ME COMPANIES!? I REFUSE TO BUY A SINGLE PRODUCT YOU MAKE IF YOU CAUSE IT TO OBSCURE MY VIEW OF SHAKING, SCANTILY CLAD WOMEN!
How's the Football?
It's actually pretty good. The game isn't sloppy and half rate at all. These people aren't the best talent that the NFL has to offer, but they are talented nonetheless and do very well. It does hold my interest more than College football.
The players also are paid far less than the NFL players, making a few thousand a game. I think the breakdown was 5,500 for QB's, 4,500 for everyone else except Kickers, who get 3,500 a game. Plus they can get a 2,500 bonus for a win. Pretty cool, paid by performance, and not paid a ridiculous sum of money.
The rule differences do make the XFL a little more interesting than the NFL at times. I think the rule changes, especially allowing the celebrations on field, is a wonderful thing. The NFL appears to have gone the other way, and sought to legislate the fun out of the game.
Cameras in the locker rooms!
No, you aren't seeing naked guys. You are seeing angry coaches and players and little talks before a game, during half-time, and after.
So what are you in for if you decide to tune in to the XFL??
More interviews on the sidelines!
Microphones right up on the players, so you can hear them talkin' smack, and you can hear everything the Quarterback is saying before he gets the ball. You will also know the plays called down from the offensive coordinator at times. The sound quality of the XFL needs work. Often times there were a few seconds of absolute silence.
Announcers:
Jessie "The Governor" Ventura. It's a good thing.
Overall, the XFL fills a void left by the NFL and it does it well.
Oh, and fireworks, Lots of fireworks. Fireworks are COOL!
