| Kelamandasmom's Full Review: White Castle |
I just couldn't resist. I had to do a review on my al time favorite fast food restaurant, White Castle. To me, White Castle is more than just a mere fast food joint. It's memories of a simpler time. Memories of my childhood, my past. White Castle is also memories in the making, as my husband and children frequent the establishment for our belly bomber fix.
For those of you poor souls who aren't familier with White Castle, here is a quick history lesson. Over 75 years ago, White Castle was born selling burgers (hereby known as belly bombers)and shakes at a great price. White Castle has grown throughout the years to include a vast menu, including breakfast in some areas. Two things haven't changed though. Getting the most for your money, and that one of a kind, steam grilled taste.
That's right kiddies, I said steamed. White Castle Burgers are actually steam cooked on a grill, and made to order. the process is a simple and painles one. First, the grill is covered in chopped onion (yes, I know they're reconstituted). Atop of this bed of onions, square beef patties are placed. Each patty has 5 holes in it. The holes, enable the burgers to cook quickly, without turning them in the process. Following the burger patties is their square bun counterpart. The bun bottoms are placed directly on top of the patties, while the bun tops are placed a little off the top and to the side. The end result is what they call the one of the kind, steam grilled taste. Burgers are topped with two dill pickes chips, and ketchup. Cheese and bacon are available upon request as well.
I was never lucky enough to actually work in our local White Castle. I was lucky enough though to be able to watch ther burgers being made, from the comfort of the glass parchment. While your watching, tell the guy you want extra onions. I'm sure he'll be happy to accomadate!
White Castle has grown throughout the years to host a variety of tasty treats. Besides their infamous burgers, and shakes, White Castle now has chicken sandwiches, fish sandwiches, chicken rings (yes, I said rings), mozzerella sticks, fried clam strips, and of course, french fries (liquid cheese available upon request). Do you see a pattern here? yes, mostly everything is fried. I would not recommend eating this menu on a daily basis!
But for convienance and fun factor, White Castle cannot be beat! Most stores are open 24 hours, and teenagers on a limited budget take advantage of that every weekend. I myself have braved the thirty minute wait of their drive thru time and time again for midnight pregnancy cravings. To avoid the wait, just go inside!
Now you will hear people say time and time again that White Castle burgers are greasy, nasty, and just plain out gross. I have to admit, it is an acquired taste. Greasy? Not really. But the nickname "belly bombers" is hard to shy away from. Even myself, with my iron stomach, has had a bad experience or two. These were of course hindered by the fact that I was eating DOUBLE burgers, and onion rings at 6am, after a night of drinking. Regardless, if you have a fair stomach, steer clear.
All in all, White Caslte is a part of American culture that I hope we never lose. With great prices, and great taste, you just can't go wrong. Long live the belly bomber!
