| bbbradk's Full Review: In-N-Out Burger |
I have just returned from a 2 week trip to California, and prior to this had never heard of In-N-Out.
While doing some online research on where to eat cheap in Los Angeles I came across several mentions of In-N-Out on Chowhound.com (a web based discussion board for food lovers)
I was a little intrigued, as several native Californians who were living abroad were leaving messages professing their love for a simple hamburger, and stating that In-N-Out would be the first place they stop once they arrive in California.
I started asking some questions, as I wanted to know what was it that makes a simple hamburger such a sought after item?
Turns out that In-N-Out is a very simple concept, a burger shop that realizes that burgers are their specialty and sticks with them.
That's right, there is no chicken, no veggie burgers, no salads, no carb reduced anything, no wraps, no kids meals, only burgers, fries, milkshakes and pops.
Since hamburgers are all that they make all day, they are very good at it.
Another great thing is that your hamburger will never ever be under a heat lamp.
Nothing is precooked.
You burger hits the grill after you have placed your order, sure you need to wait 5 minutes to eat, but the taste is far superior to anything the major fast food chains can whip up in their food labs.
I kept an eye peeled for an In-N-Out while on the shuttle from the airport to my hotel, and was sad when I realized there were none within walking distance.
I refused to give up my search however, and did manage to find one about a block away from Mann's Chinese Theatre.
It was a block below Hollywood Blvd, on Sunset Blvd.
The smell of fresh cooking burgers hit me as soon as I walked into the parking lot, right then I knew I would love this place.
From the outside you almost get discouraged, and start thinking this is just another fast food chain, because it is very brightly lit, and the seats and counters are all matching colors of shiny plastic.
When you have your first look at the menu though, you realize you are not at a typical chain.
The menu consists of hamburger, cheeseburger, doubleburger with cheese, french fries, milkshakes (only vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry) and sodas.
There is 1 combo offered, consisting of a burger, fries, and pop.
And that is it!!
Nothing extra, nothing they can't be the best at making.
It is a very simple menu, and as stated above, this allows them to specialize in making the best burgers in California.
I ordered a doubleburger with cheese, french fries, and a strawberry milkshake.
They gave me a reciept with a number on it, and told me my order would be out in a few minutes.
I took a seat and within 5 minutes my number was called.
I loved the fries, they were crisp, and golden brown, and very nicely salted.
I hadn't had fries like this in years, they were great, and upon finishing them I realized why they were so good.
On the wrapper they let you know that the fries are freshly peeled and cut daily at each location, and are never frozen.
I then unwrapped my double cheeseburger (it was topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, with a shmearing of sauce (kind of like thousand island dressing) and cheese
What a treat!!!
The meat was pure, it wasn't filled with fillers (such as breadcrumbs and other non meat substances many places use to thicken their burgers)
The toppings were all very fresh and crunchy, and again on the wrapper I found that they hand pull all of their own lettuce, and the pickles, onions and tomatos are hand cut daily as well.
The milkshake was outstanding as well, very thick, and flavorfull.
All of this wonderful food cost me less than a typical meal at McDonalds.
It was all so good I decided to get another burger for the road.
This time I ordered it 'Animal Style' (bun is grilled with mustard, sauteed onions instead of raw, and extra "special sauce")
Again it was delicious when I enjoyed it in my hotel room later.
(Animal Style is not offered on the menu, I read about it in the above mentioned postings on Chowhound)
The service was fast and friendly, the whole restaurant was very clean and bright, the food was incredible.
I have nothing but good things to say about this place, I only wish they would expand to Canada.
