Pros: Great guitar to learn on -- the pickup makes it easy to go electric!
Cons: A bit expensive, but it's a great guitar
The Bottom Line: This is a great guitar to learn to play on. It has decent action and a good sound. Plus, it doesn't kill those non-calloused fingers!

| bhweb22's Full Review: Takamine Eg-240 Acoustic Electric Guitar |
I recently began taking guitar lessons. Perhaps this is early onset midlife crisis, perhaps I'm just destined to be a rockstar. Whatever the reason, I found myself dusting off a guitar that I've had in my room for several years and running down the local music shop. After the first lesson, my fingers were absolutely throbbing. I asked the teacher if this was normal. He said that it was normal to feel a little pain while you were breaking in your fingers -- and then he tried out my acoustic. He called it a "finger-buster". The action was so high that I was pushing down really hard -- this led to the problems with my fingers.
I asked him what options I had. One was go get the guitar worked up at the shop. This would cost almost as much as a new guitar... so I took the second option. I put the old guitar on my rec-room wall and went to look at some new ones. A good friend of mine (and good guitarist) recommended his Takamine 240 to me. I went over to try it out and immediately felt the difference. When you are just starting out, you want a guitar that you WANT to play. The G240 is that type of instrument.
The action was much lower and the stinging went away. The sound quality was much better. The buzzing went away and the strings sounded true.
The body is a bit thick, so you need to get your arm around it to strum it fully, but this is okay...this guitar forces good habits, and that's exactly what I need at this point. This guitar holds a tune really well. It really only needs adjustments every week or so... and I test it every day with an electronic tuner.
As far as appearance, it has a rosewood neck and fret board, and a traditional body. It's not flashy, but it is a good-looking instrument. I especially like the fact that it has a pick up. Although I have not used it as an electric (better to play badly less audibly), it's nice to know that I can rock out if I want to.
Because it's an acoustic/electric, it has a hard shell case that makes it bulky, but portable. I'd guess that serious musicians would need a slimmer strummer if they were moving around a lot.
Simply put -- I'm not good, but at least my guitar is.
PS -- Mike always reads my reviews... Thanks for all your help, when are we jamming?
