Intervideo DVD Copy Platinum is available for download via www.Intervideo.com website as a trial version. I don't remember the difference between the trial and fully registered version. It wasn't a ripping time limit, but I think it was a day limit. "Ripping," mean the copying of the DVD data and converting process which is automated as one.
I have been using this software for a while now. Copying "my," DVD movies into the more affordable SVCD (Super Video CD) format.
The software features:
Format supported:
- DVD to DVD/MDVD
- DVD to VCD/SVCD
- DVD to DivX CD
- DVD to your hard drive in MPEG-1/2 or DivX
A few main features:
- UniPass: "One pass, used by other DVD ripper program also."
- Direct Burn: Using two seperate drives. One drive reading the DVD and the other burning it. Saving time.
- InterVideo's IBBP: 1:1 copies. Bit per bit.
I don't have a DVD burner, even though it pretty cheap now. But SVCD works for me and save me money for the more important life necessities.
A quick difference between VCD and SVCD. Both are playable on almost all home DVD players. SVCD is "super." Better quality pictures and higher fidelity sounds. VCD is like watching a clean VHS tape. SVCD is near the quality of DVD. That is why I used SVCD. The average cost for 1 CDR is about 10 cent or less for me. A DVDR is way a lot higher.
The average CDR disks are 3 to have 1 DVD movie formatted as SVCD. VCD average is 2.
The software:
Intervideo claimed to be the fastest but not exactly. It just rip and burn at the same time = saving time = "fastest," claim. This is a user selectable option. You can save the movie file/s onto your hard drive instead. But it will not allow you to burn it later via the software. You will need another software that can burn VCD/SVCD. A noted negative.
The Graphic User Interface:
Simple to use. 3 steps (source, destination and copy) with nice graphics and colors. I enjoyed the clean looking user interface because it is more pleasing and friendly for family uses.
It does not support the copying of copyrighted (commercial) DVD. Use Slysoft "AnyDVD," or "DVD X Ghost," to bypass the problem.
You can choose to copy certain chapters with a convenient preview screen for the DVD and also allow custom size CDR splits. For example the support for 700mb or 640mb CDR.
The picture and sound quality results:
DVD ripping is flawless quality. Not surprised.
Also allow you to copy multi DVD onto 1 DVD.
The VCD quality is great.. for VCD.
The SVCD is great also. A little bit pixelization during fast motion. Noticeable more on full screen DVD. Widescreen format is much less.
DivX "laptop," mode allow you to fit the whole DVD onto 1 CDR disk. The quality is similar to VCD. The "Home Theater," mode is near flawless to DVD quality but the size is similar also. I didn't get the usefulness point.
DivX is only playable on your home PC.
The bottom line:
The users interface is easy enough for anyone to use. The ripping process is above average speed with a highest quality output in whatever format you choose to convert to. Installation of the software is simple also with the common built-in help option. Software service and support help from the company is average. I didn't need it just because it's pretty simple to use.
The few negatives I had was the ability not to burn the saved VCD/SVCD files later. I use the trial version of "Dup-DVD," or any another DVD software will work. Why don't I just use Dup-DVD," because it is a trial version, ugly users interface, ripping speed and output quality.
I had an SVCD widescreen problem also. The letterbox (top and bottom black area) was increased resulting in a midget people effect/image squeeze. I'm not sure if it is just my PC.
If you do have a problem with your VCD/SVCD disk not playing on your home DVD. Try to lower the CDR burn speed. This is a common problem for some audio burners also.
Is it worth the buy? It's up to you. I enjoy it, but use other sharewares or trialware to cover the area it missed. I.e. the recording of saved VCD/SVCD.
