As I've gotten older, I have had an increasing amount of aches and pains, as well as headaches (though that might come from having a rambunctious 2-year-old). Suffering from minor aches and pains I've read some articles in passing about various massage and acupuncture techniques which can be used to alleviate the pain.
A friend of ours somehow managed to get a case of Emjoi Electro Acupuncture devices right around the holidays. He was selling the devices, which normally retail for around $100, for a mere $20 (to friends). After checking out what the website had to say my curiosity was piqued enough to part with the $20 and try one out.
According to the manufacturers site at www.emjoi.com:

Electro Acupuncture is a non-invasive pain reliever that combines the wisdom of ancient China's art of acupuncture with modern electronics to bring you a hand-held electro-acupuncture device. Without puncturing the skin, it works by the same principles of the ancient art by electronically stimulating the body's acupuncture points, leading to pain relief.
The Emjoi Electro Acupuncture device is a small hand-held unit that is powered by a single 9 volt battery. Though Epinions lists this item in shaving/grooming, it has nothing to do with hair removal. As its name says, it is for electro acupuncture.
Use of the device is simple - merely turn it on and run it over the area in which you are experiencing pain. In theory the unit is supposed to pinpoint the area in which there is pain (using bio-feedback) and stimulate that area. You can choose from an intensity level of 1 to 10, with 10 being the strongest. I highly recommend you start out with the lowest setting.
The Emjoi device is non-invasive and does not use needles - that you may automatically associate as being a necessary evil of acupuncture. Instead it has a flat face with 36 gold-plated pins that use electronic pulses.
So does it work?
I will preface this statement by saying that I don't consider myself to be a wuss. I'd even go so far as saying that I have a fairly high threshold for pain. Tattoos, piercings, the idea of needles do not scare me. The pain inflicted by the aforementioned is all bearable, but this small Emjoi device is completely another story.
When you first decide to try it out, use the lowest setting - as mentioned above. Turn it on and quickly apply it to the effected area. Apply it quickly before you have time to change your mind, or psych yourself out of it. The mental torture can be almost as bad as applying the unit itself. The sensations delivered from the device range from a pins and needles feeling to something of sheer torture. Unfortunately, I have found literally no rhyme or reason to what areas will hurt more than others. For example, one area on your shoulder might feel ok but then if you slide it over just like an inch or so you will think that you have just been zapped with a cattle-prod.
Emjoi recommends using the unit to relieve pain on your back, neck, shoulders, and hands or anywhere on your body where you feel pain. Of course, talk to your doctor before you take pain into your hands - but its been my experience that a TENS unit and an OMRON unit are more effective than this Evil Thing(Tm).
Emjoi also says this is good for relieving migraines. I can't imagine putting this electric torture device on my head on any regular basis - though the manufacturer says that it is safe. For purposes of this review I actually tried it - I did not like it nor find that it helped relieve pain in any way. I also found that the unit had a hard time conducting through my hair - and no way am I shaving my head.
If you are looking to purchase the Emjoi Electro Acupuncture Device for pain relief purposes I would think twice. First, the retail price of $100 seems ridiculously high. Even for the $20 that I spent it seems to be $20 too much for something that does not relieve pain, but merely inflicts it.
The unit is really only good for a scare tactic - i.e. Get offline or I will zap you with the Emjoi. Make me dinner or I'm getting out the Emjoi... along those lines. On the other hand, if pain is your thing and you are up for some self-torture - this may be a great buy for you. (If so, then check out the Epilady too).
