Great drive.
I've had the Lacie D2 drive for almost five years and am very happy with it.
Plain English Specs:
This is an external Firewire Hard Drive that holds 120 GB of data. External means that its not inside your computer. Firewire is the kind of cable and stuff that connects your computer to the hard drive. In order to connect this hard drive to your computer, you need to have Firewire ports on the back of your computer. If you dont have Firewire ports, you can buy them and install into your computer.
What was the purchasing experience like?
I was surprised to discover that very few brick and mortar stores in the Chicagoland area sold Lacie D2 products. I called several places, finally discovering that the Apple Store had them in stock. Since my previous drive (a VST Firewire Drive) had suddenly flat-out stopped working, I needed an external drive right away so I went there. I spent quite a bit more than I would have online, but I did get to see the drive before I bought it and I didnt have to wait for shipping.
While in the Apple Store, I decided to reap the benefits of Apple employee expertise, so I asked why there was such a big price jump between the 200 GB D2 and the 120. The employee said that the 200 GB had a substantially faster hard drive, but that I would not notice the faster speed unless I edited film and other gigantic files directly on that drive. I dont edit gigantic files so the vastly extra cost was not worthwhile to me.
How was setup?
Setup was extremely easy. Ignoring all disks and instruction manuals, I plugged the D2 drive into the wall, and the firewire cable from hard drive to firewire port on back of computer. A few seconds later, the drive mounted on my Macs desktop. Perfect!
Is it reliable?
I've had it over a year with no problems, so so far it seems very reliable. To impress me, it will need to last at least three years though.
Is it noisy?
The drive is quiet. I do not notice the sound it makes at all. This is in striking contrast to my previous hard drive, a VST External Firewire Drive. That drive was so loud I could hear it when I was in other rooms of my home.
What software is bundled?
The most worthwhile piece of bundled software is called Silverkeeper. You can use it to automatically backup files to the Lacie Drive. It is logical and intuitive software.
How does it look?
This hard drive is in the beautiful D2 case. It is in an aluminum shell, has a cool-looking blue light, and it is surprisingly heavy. The heaviness is actually a good thing as you wont be as likely to knock it off your desk if there is some office commotion. La Cie makes external hard drives, CD writers and DVD writers all in D2 cases, and you can stack them, rack-mount them or just put them side by side, and they will look gorgeous together.
Conclusion:
I'm very happy with my D2 drive, and so I also purchased a Lacie D2 CD writer, which I love.
