| surferdude7's Full Review: Canon i9100D (Bundle) InkJet Photo Printer |
The Canon i9100D prints borderless 13" x 19" prints in about five minutes and a borderless 4" x 6" print in less than one minute. I would speculate to say this is the replacement for the Canon S9000 Personal Printer, which was the best Canon printer on the market. The main difference between the i9100D and the S9000 is the S9000 has bordered prints and the i9100D has borderless prints, as far as quality, both are excellent. The i9100D seems a little quieter than the S9000 and both save you on ink costs because you only replace the color that you are out of.
Now you get borderless printing in the following sizes, 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 7 inches, 8.5 x 11 inches and 13 x 19 inches.
Installation
I run Windows XP Pro and all I had to do is plug the printer into an Ac outlet and a USB port to the computer and it recognized the printer without any problems. I went and installed the drivers to get the best performance out of the printer.
Ink
The i9100D uses six separate colors that are easy to change when that particular color runs out. The colors are Black, Yellow, Cyan, Photo Cyan, Magenta and Photo Magenta. This system will save you money on ink in the long run because you only change the color that is out and not a cartridge with three colors and only one color is out.
Like most printers, it monitors your ink levels and warns you before you run out. What I like, the cartridges are clear, when a cartridge is full you will see two chambers full of ink. The left chamber is smaller but it has nothing but ink in it. The right chamber has the cotton or foam in it, so when you are completely out the left chamber, there will be no ink in it and it is very easy to see. So now when you get a warning that the ink is low, you can pop out the cartridge and get a good idea of how low it is.
The i9100D uses Micro-Fine Droplet Technology with 4800 x 1200 dpi, this is double the dpi of the S9000, which has 2400 x 1200 dpi.
Compatibility
The i9100D has only a USB connection, no parallel; it is made for all Windows 98 to XP. For the Macintosh is can be used for OS 8.6-9.X and OS X v 10.2.1 and up.
Printing Speeds
Here are the printing speeds that I had, so you an idea of how long it takes to print a borderless photo.
4 x 6 inch prints, one 38 seconds, one 42 seconds and one at 43 seconds.
5 x 7 inch prints were not tested because I didn't have any paper.
8.5 x 11 inch prints, one was 1 minute & 2 seconds and the other was 1 minute & 23 seconds.
13 x 19 inch prints, one was 5 minutes and 3 seconds and the other was 5 minutes and 29 seconds.
Remember different photos will print different times; a photo with a lot of white in it will print faster than one full of colors.
My Likes
I love the 13 x 19 inch borderless prints with the bright rich colors.
I like the six separate ink cartridges that save on the cost of ink and being able to look at the ink cartridge to see if is empty.
Setup is real easy, it takes 5 to 10 minutes to unpack and have it ready to print.
My Dislikes
The only dislike is the price of around $399; this is $100 lower than when the S9000 came out.
Software
The printer I am using came with drivers and software for both Windows and Macintosh.
For Windows and Macintosh they include Easy-PhotoPrint and PhotoStitch.
For Windows included is PhotoRecord, ZoomBrowser EX, Easy-WebPrint and PhotoRecord.
For Macintosh include is ImageBrowser.
Other Specifications
Size - 22.5" Wide x 13.1" Deep x 7.7" High
Weight - 17.6 pounds
A one-year limited warranty with InstantExchange Program
Buffer/Ram - 80KB
Number of Nozzles - 3,072 nozzles, that is 512 x 6 colors.
Overall
The i9100D prints faster than the S9000, it is quieter and probably produces a better photo than the S9000. I cannot tell much improvement as far as quality, both are excellent printers. I personally wouldn't run out and get the new printer if I already own the S9000, unless you have to have borderless prints. Now if I were in the market for a new great photo printer I would recommend finding a store that has one so they can demonstrate how great the photo quality is.
The i9100D is an excellent photo printer as well as an all around purpose printer. It will print practically any type and size of paper on the market. You will have to purchase a USB cable if you don't have one.
