I felt compelled to write a review of the Bissell 7950 ProHeat Self Propelled Steam Cleaner after using it for the first time. If you have pets, then a steam cleaner is a must-have.
If you're in the market for a steam cleaner, this is one you should seriously consider. I also looked at the Hoover Widepath 7930-900, which has gotten some good reviews on this site.
The Hoover Widepath also has heated cleaning and they both have a number of onboard tools for upholstry and pre-treating. The main difference is the Hoover is not self-propelled and with a tank full of water, it can be quite heavy. In fact, I tried using the Bissell without the self propelled option and it was quite heavy, especially if you have a large area to clean.
It is extremely easy to use, you fill one dispenser with the cleaning solution, and the removeable tank with hot water. The one gallon tank has a handle making it easy to carry and dispense. There are three knobs: one for turning on/off self propelled feature, one for heavy/normal soiled areas, and one for onboard tools/floor cleaning. On the forward stroke, you pull the handle to dispense the cleaning solution and back stroke rinses and vacuums the dirty water.
The most important factor is how well it cleans. I think it cleans very well, evident when you dispense the dirty water from the removeable tank. One important note, you must pre-treat heavy stains. It doesn't do quite a good job on stains that haven't been pre-treated.
The self propelled feature is good; it kind of guides the cleaner by not going too fast. If you find yourself either pulling or pushing the cleaner, then you're probably going to fast to clean properly. It definitely makes the job a lot easier.
On the downside, it's quite heavy. It weighs about 30lbs. and the size is a bit awkward especially going up and down stairs, you can easily hit a wall or door frame. Also, I found myself dispensing the tank often given the one gallon size. You can probably clean a room about 20 x 20 on one trip. I also wish it had an auto rinse feature since it leaves the carpet a bit soapy.
In all, it's a good cleaner and it sure beats renting a steam cleaner from the supermarket or hardware store. You'll find that its a worth while investment on your carpets and your back.
