On the coast by Chuckanut Mountain, just south of Bellingham, almost as far northwest as you can get in the lower 48, Larabee State park is super!
I was there for a weekend campout with a group of friends in September of 1999. There's a campground with spaces for tents, and for RVs, with trees all around and good, clean showers and restrooms. there are campsites for walk-ins and large groups, too.
While there, we took a great, easy hike (almost a walk) down to Clayton Beach. the path was broad and easy most of the way, with a bit of a scramble down a smooth rock outcrop and a railroad crossing before you hit the beach.
The beach was the nicest I've been to in Washington! good areas of sand and shell, and large rocks with tide pools and anemones. (btw, Washington beaches aren't really for swimming, I think! the water is pretty cold all year, whether you are talking about freshwater lakes, the Puget Sound, or the Pacific Ocean. better for walking, exploring, enjoying the sunshine, or wading.)
there are hikes that are more strenuous, and a lot of people do mountain biking.
State Park fees are very reasonable. Check it out!
