Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
David Lynch is one of my favorite, if not my all-time favorite, directors. His imagination is beyond that of a genius and like ERASERHEAD, he creates these short films with the intent to leave viewers determining their own meaning for what they just watched.
The first short, SIX FIGURES GETTING SICK is very artsy most obviously because it is simply moving pictures with no real actors, but also because the viewer is left bewildered at what is happening. There is no story and no answers... only questions.
THE ALPHABET is next. This, quite possibly, has the most haunting images on the DVD. It is a short look at a woman sick in bed reciting the alphabet quickly. She coughs up blood to our astonishment and we are left wondering what it all means.
Next, a fairly popular film among Lynch fans is THE GRANDMOTHER. In this short, a young boy facing the brutality of his barking parents (yes, they actually bark), plants a seed and grows a grandmother who he can love and be loved by in return. It is strange and very surreal, but you cannot help but to watch on in amazement. The images are like nothing one could ever imagine besides Lynch.
THE AMPUTEE is a very disturbing look at a woman who has had her leg amputated sitting and writing a letter. The dialogue comes from the woman's thoughts as she continues writing, but it isn't long before the viewer realizes they are watching a nurse wash and care for the wound where the woman's leg used to be. Blood and other fluids leak from the opening yet the woman doesn't stray from her letter.
LUMIERE is the shortest of all the films. It is a jumble of different images concerning a dead man's body and mysterious scientific experiments. It is only 55 seconds long. Take from it what you will.
The final piece is a short film called THE COWBOY AND THE FRENCHMAN in which we get to see Lynch's comedic side. It is basically a look at how Lynch views the French culture. He doesn't disappoint his fans by straying from his typical Lynchian ways. It is funny yes, but still so David Lynch. Watch it to find out what I mean.
Before each short film there is an optional introduction by Lynch. While he doesn't give many if any answers away, it is interesting to hear some of the back story for each short.
