I knew it would be good, but I am very happy to say it was VERY GOOD. In my opinion, it is the best Batman movie yet. My previous favorite of the bunch was Batman Returns.
Christopher Nolan weaved a wonderful tale of a flawed hero, introducing the origins of relationships we have grown to love over the past several decades, namely the relationship between Batman and (soon to be) Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman.)
I felt the two villains in the movie (The Scarecrow and Ra's Al Ghul) were actually the most effective villains in a Batman movie yet. The Scarecrow was actually a plausible villain, with no other power than to instill fear in his victims.
One of my favorite aspects of the film was near the end, when Gordon expressed his concern about how will they ever get all the inmates or Arkham Asylum rounded up. Well, in case you didn't know, in the comic, Arkham Asylum is where all the criminally insane Super-Villains of the Batman universe end up... So these escape inmates will become the Joker, the Riddler, and so on.
While there are funny moments in Batman Begins, there isn't any camp. There is a big villainous plot uncovered, and there is a big gadget involved in the plot. The Batmobile in this installment is basically a tank, which is the only thing I didn't like going into this, but it played out very effectively.
I had no idea the movie was 2:30 hours long. It didn't seem like it, and I didn't want it to end.
We can only hope Nolan directs the next Batman. Somebody finally got it right.
