kjscrafts's Full Review: Hello Kitty Tells Fairy Tales
Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie''s plot.
This DVD contains five different episodes of Hello Kitty. Each episode is based on a classic fairy tale or tales. Each episode starts with demonstrating that the fairy tales are being acted out by the Hello Kitty characters as plays at the Hello Kitty Fairy Tale Theater. Some follow the fairy tale more closely than others, but most have a Hello Kitty rendition that makes the retellings unique and thus more enjoyable to watch even if you have seen the particular fairy tale done in many other versions.
The first episode is "Robin Penguin." This is a retelling of Robin Hood. It overall it is the one that most closely follows the classic story. It is not exactly the same, though, especially with the interesting twist of them fighting with pillows instead of normal weapons.
The second episode is called "Hello Mother Goose." In this episode Hello Kitty plays a character called Hello Mother Goose. She gets a bunch of complaints into a hot line about things that are wrong based on how Mother Goose rhymes are supposed to work out. This leads her to trying to solve the mystery of where everyone's things went. I appreciate the uniqueness of the plot in this episode, but the plot moves very fast with the scenes being very quick making it hard to follow the plot, especially for kids, who I think this DVD will most interest.
The third episode is called "The Ugly Quackling." It is based on the The Ugly Duckling. I personally do not think this follows the original very closely, but am not entirely certain if my memory is right about the original story, thus I cannot say for certain this is an unique rendition.
The fourth episode is Pinocchio Penguin. This is a fast retelling of Pinocchio, but it does not feel too fast like the second episode. This one follows the classic story rather closely and is actually one of the least interesting because the main unique thing is just that Pinocchio is a penguin. While I do love penguins and that Pinocchio is one in this episode, it is not enough uniqueness to really make this an interesting episode.
The fifth and final episode is Little Red Bunny Hood. This one is my favorite of the five because it is the most unique retelling and the plot moves at a good pace. It is set in a Wild West setting and part of the uniqueness is the addition of bandits as being the bad guys along with the separate normal bad guy of the wolf.
Overall this is an entertaining DVD for preschool age kids. I personally really like the penguin character in the episodes, but Hello Kitty is also a somewhat popular character. The retellings of the fairy tales are mostly unique and make them an entertaining change from the classic fairy tale movies. It does, however, have some weak episodes, especially "Hello Mother Goose." Also, the special features are annoying to me because they are only DVD-ROM features and they do not work on a Mac
