dragonfire88's Full Review: Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
For a long time Disney was really the only company making animated movies. They have created several that are considered classics now. I love Disney movies. For the last several years, other companies have started to make animated movies. Ive also enjoyed those movies. I love animated movies. Dreamworks has made several animated movies that have been successful. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is the newest animated movie from Dreamworks. I just saw the movie and really enjoyed it.
Eris, the goddess of chaos, was looking down on Earth, looking for opportunities to cause problems. She spotted a pirate ship following a ship that contained a great treasure. She sent her sea monster down to the ocean to cause more problems.
Sinbad was the captain of the pirate ship. He and his crew were planning to steal one last thing and then head to Fiji. Sinbad and his men boarded the other ship and fought with the men. Sinbad and his men seemed to be overpowering the others when Sinbad and Kale noticed one of the men fighting. It was Proteus, a childhood friend of Sinbads. The two men talked and Sinbad shared his plans to steal the book of peace and ransom it off so he could retire to Fiji. The book of peace was a special book that protected the twelve cities.
Sinbad and Proteus were having a sword fight when the ship was attacked by Eriss sea monster. The two men worked together to fight off the monster. Sinbad was pulled overboard. Eris appeared in the ocean and talked to Sinbad. She would make him very rich if hed steal the book of peace for her. He agreed and made his way back to the surface where his men pulled him back on board the ship.
Proteus was a Prince and his father Dymas had dreamed of having the book of peace there for years. The book was placed in a tower that was heavily guarded. There was a huge celebration going on when Sinbad and his men arrived. Sinbad and Proteus talked. Proteus introduced Sinbad to the woman he was going to marry, Marina. Sinbad left right after that and returned to his ship.
While the celebration was going on, Eris made her way into the tower, took the form of Sinbad, and stole the book of peace. Sinbad was then arrested and sentenced to death. No one believed him when he said that Eris had done it. Then Proteus arrived, demanding the right to take Sinbads place. Proteus believed his former friend. Sinbad was to go and get the book back from Eris. He had ten days to return with the book or Proteus would be executed in his place.
Sinbad and his men left. Sinbad said they were going to Fiji. Then he discovered that Marina was the ship. She said she was there to make sure Sinbad went after the book. He still said he wasnt going, but she convinced him. They changed course and headed after Eris and the book. They encountered dangerous waters, sirens, and other obstacles along their way. Eris was watching Sinbads progress, and she caused problems for him, trying to keep him from reaching his destination.

Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas was released on July 3, 2003. The movie was 85 minutes long and rated PG. The movie hasnt done too well at the box office, and I think that is too bad because the movie is really good. I think the timing of the movies release contributed to the lower box office for it. Finding Nemo was still drawing in a lot of money at the beginning of July. There were a few other family movies out then as well as the two other July 3 openings, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and Legally Blonde 2, both of which were expected to do well. Legally Blonde 2 could appeal to older girls more than Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines may appeal more to boys, even though it is not a movie for children. I saw a parent taking 3 very young children - all close to 5 I think - into Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. This movie would have been a much better choice for children that young.
I did enjoy Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. It was very entertaining and fun to watch. There were some sword fights near the beginning of the movie, but I didnt really think those scenes were that violent. There were several action scenes in the movie, including some fights with monsters or huge animals. I wasnt bored with the movie. There were a few scenes when I didnt know what would happen next, though there were some predictable moments as well.
There was a small amount of romance in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. That isnt unusual for animated movies. Marina and Proteus were supposed to get married. Their marriage had been arranged many years before. When Marina was on the ship with Sinbad, they spent a lot of time together and became close. They developed feelings for each other, though they were conflicted because of Proteus. There was a kiss or two included in the movie, but that was it. There were no sex scenes of any kind. Sinbads partially bare behind was shown once though.
I had heard of Sinbad before seeing Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. I think there has been at least one other movie made about that character, but I dont remember ever seeing it. Im not that familiar with the stories of Sinbad, so I have no idea if any of the events from this movie were from some earlier Sinbad movie or story. I remember studying mythology in school, but I dont remember hearing about the book of peace. I think I remember hearing about Eris when I studied mythology, but I cant remember for sure since it has been so long ago. She was a goddess in the movie, and she was very powerful. Her actions do seem to be like the gods and goddesses of mythology that I remember. A lot of them liked to interfere with what was happening on Earth. Eris did have some monsters under her control. I remember reading about some other monsters in mythology, along with the sirens. I did think that the plot of the movie was interesting.
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas was an animated movie from Dreamworks. I think that the movie featured hand drawn animation. I dont think that hurt the movie at all. The animation was still beautiful and very well done. It wasnt as good as the animation in Finding Nemo, but that is a different sort of animation. Computer animation and hand drawn animation are two different things. I dont think that the two should be compared since they are done differently. I happen to like both. Computer animation is very impressive and beautiful, but hand drawn animation can be as well. The people who draw the animation are very talented. I have read some things recently where some people have said that hand drawn animation is on the way out and will be completly replaced by computer animation. That it isnt as good as computer animation, and therefore shouldnt be used anymore. That is not true at all. Hand drawn animation is just as good, just in a different way. There is room for both types of animation. Hand drawn animation is an art form. It should not be left to die just because computer animation has some so far.
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is one of two pirate movies that were released in July. The other is Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is also the second animated movie in less than a year to feature pirates. The other was the Disney movie Treasure Planet that was released in November of 2002. I have liked all three of these movies, though my favorite has been Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Ive liked other pirate movies and have been fascinated by the idea of buried treasure. Ive also read a few books dealing with pirates and treasure that I have really liked. Pirate movies could be making a come back, and that would be fine with me. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas was a bit different from other pirate movies. The treasure Sinbad was after was a book instead of actual gold or jewels. There were sword fights in this movie and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, as well as in some other recently released movies, including the newest James Bond movie, Die Another Day. I did just rent Shanghi Knights, and that movie also included some sword fights as well. Those seem to be turning up in several movies lately.
There were a few things in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas that could be a bit scary or upsetting to very young children. There was a huge sea monster near the beginning of the movie that could scare young children. I think it would probably be ok for children around six or so. If parents have concerns about the content of the movie, they should see it before letting their children see it.
I thought that the voices in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas were very good. They all matched well with the characters. Brad Pitt has not done a voice for an animated movie before, but I think his voice worked well for Sinbad. I dont think Catherine Zeta-Jones has done a voice for an animated movie before either, but her voice was good as well. It went well with Marina. Michelle Pfeiffer did a voice for the first Dreamworks animated movie, Prince of Egypt. I havent seen that movie yet. I think Michelles voice was perfect for Eris. It matched perfectly with the way Eris was drawn. Jim Cummings, the voice of Luca, one of the pirates, has done voices for many other animated movies, including the voice of Tigger. The voice he used for Luca was nothing like Tiggers voice. I would have noticed if one of the pirates was talking like Tigger.
There were a lot of characters in Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, but several of them were members of Sinbads crew and not developed at all. Sinbad was the main character and the most developed. Even he wasnt fully developed though. The movie focused more on the action of the voyage instead of character development. Marina was fairly well developed, though not as developed as Sinbad. Proteus didnt have too many scenes, so he was barely developed. His father turned up a few times as well, but other than being proud to have the book of peace there and not wanting his son to die, nothing was shared about him.
CHARACTERS
Sinbad - Pirate who was planning to retire to Fiji. Hed been friends with Proteus when they both were children. Sinbad tried to act like he didnt care about some things, but he really did. He seemed to be annoyed by Marina a lot.
Proteus - Prince and former friend of Sinbad. Proteus believed Sinbad so much that he took his place in prison. Proteus seemed to be a kind man who believed in people.
Marina - Young woman who was supposed to marry Proteus. She was an ambassador. Shed always longed to travel on the sea. She was a strong, resourceful woman. She kept her cool in dangerous situations.
I did enjoy Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas. I will be getting the movie on DVD once it is released. This movie would be good for families.
