This movie gets credit for starting the viewer out in one place and ending up in quite another.
"The Sixth Sense" stars Bruce Willis as "Dr. Malcolm Crowe", an award winning child psychologist who meets up with one of his earlier "mistakes" at the beginning of the film. From there the scene fast forwards to six months in the future where he has a new patient, "Cole", sensationally played by child actor Haley Joel Osment. Cole is a child paralyzed by fear, with big, staring eyes and little to say. After probably half the film (too long, IMO) is over, Cole finally reveals the reason for his fear to Dr. Crowe: "I see dead people." -- the boy sees ghosts.
In the meantime, Bruce is brooding about the unfortunate "mistake" he made with another patient earlier and hoping he can redeem himself by curing Cole, who exhibits the same symptoms. Bruce's wife is distraught that he is spending so much time obsessing over the boy, to the point that their marriage is suffering. The boy's mother is at a loss wondering what is the matter with her child. The scene where the mother is feeding Cole breakfast only to turn around and see all the kitchen cabinets and drawers open made me think, "uh oh, another 'Exorcist'." However, the twist at the end was a pleasant surprise. It is quite original for a film nowadays.
As a minor con, the film drags along a good bit -- there are significant time lapses before things get moving. Bruce Willis does a very good job but Haley Joel Osment's performance is really sensational and is the strongest reason to see "The Sixth Sense".
