It's been roughly three years since Arnold's last big budget action movie (let's all just pretend Batman & Robin didn't happen), and as a fan of the man and the genre I had been looking forward to this film for a while now. With the trailers popping up everywhere on TV and in theaters recently, and the prospect of Arnold facing off with the Devil himself, I was certainly excited to see what he would bring to the screen this time around. Would he have a strong outing a la True Lies, or would this be another Last Action Hero at the box office?
Unfortunately, I didn't come away from the theater feeling my questions had been completely answered. The two main adversaries are very good. Arnold was more than adequate as Jericho, a man whose tragic past has driven him to the edge, while Gabriel Byrne is excellent as the warped Prince of Evil. The dark and twisted atmosphere of the movie is often disturbing (definitely not a family movie), but to good effect. But disappointingly, two of the main action sequences really broke no new ground whatsoever and actually brought to mind scenes from two recent Keanu Reeves films, (Speed and The Matrix. Worst of all, the movie really failed to convey a sense of urgency to me at times when by its very nature it should have.
Overall I would say it's worth going to if you like Arnold movies and enjoy movies with a dark, disturbing atmosphere (Seven, Fight Club, etc.), but if you're looking for something new you probably won't find it here.
