It was really fascinating. I'm not sure exactly what planet these people came from, but apparently on their planet, it doesn't really matter if you start to whisper to your honey during those really quiet parts of the movie, like when the plastic bag is floating around the screen and the theatre is dead silent. It's during those moments that people decide that it's time to start talking, most likely because it is at those precise moments that people won't get interrupted by the movie. American Beauty itself was a wonderful movie, filled with all those things that you'd like in a movie including sex, a bunch of blood, and the realization that the parts of life that you think are really really important just aren't any more. Remember that job of yours? Bah! Who needs it?! says this movie. And it would seem to me that a lot of people in the theatre were really taking that to heart. Rather that worry about all the rest of the people around them, these folks just up and started packing up their garbage before the end of the movie. While on screen we saw that a plastic bag floating in the wind is about as close as you can come to some supreme higher purpose here on earth, in the theatre, folks seemed to be getting into the groove of their own plastic bags. Wrinkle wrinkle crinkle crinkle. These, of course, are the same people muttering "who would bring a baby into a theatre?" as the mother hushed her child and walked it out of the theater. Crinkle crinkle. "The nerve of some people."
It's really a wonderful thing how people can become so inspired by a movie as to alter their behavior right then and there in the theatre.
