When the reviews came in for the Matrix, the general impression that an average reader would have was that it was one of the most intelligent sci-fi thrillers ever. Well, unfortunately that isn't true. However, it is still adrenaline-dipped, visually astonishing, lifestyle-emulating meme-candy.
There is no point during the film in which a viewer should have time to get bored, and once you have left the cinema you will feel invigorated, powerful and rather in the mood to find lots of guns and kill lots of non-people who are interfering in your life. What more you could ask for in a film I don't know.
Except people want it to be cleverer than it actually is. There are only two common virtual reality plots in existence. The first one is the one where people go into virtual reality and like it more than real life (Lawnmower man etc). They don't want to come out again. The other one is where people find that the life that have been living is itself virtual reality (to an extent The Truman Show, eXistenZ etc). This is plot number two with a couple of twists.
There is nothing brilliant about using such a plot - nothing brilliant at all.
However, while the basic premise is lacking in originality, considerable effort has gone into following it through to its logical conclusion (the ability to influence the world, the position and opinions of the artificial intelligences within it etc). This is as it should be.
In essence you should be more than content that you have a well-worked through, fully realised version of V.R.P.#2, but don't pretend you've just seen Hamlet.
