This is a hard review for me to write. I really liked the actors in this movie and parts were really good. The problem is the action, or lack of it. There is a LOT of dialogue in this movie and it is often a confusing jumble since the characters are on drugs. I really want to like this movie but other times I hate it.
Hurlyburly came out in 1998 and is based on a play by David Rabe. it is rated R and 122 mins long. It stars Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri and many more people.
There doesn't seem to be real plot to this movie. It is more like a look into the lives of 4 LA men. You really get to see the seedier side of Hollywood here. The basic idea of the movie is how the personal lives of this group of men are so disastrous, and how that is better than anything they are doing in their Hollywood jobs.
These men are not nice people. They are violent, treat women like dirt, they are selfish and drug fiends but you cannot help but watch their sad lives unravel on the screen. As the guys get more drugged up the more horrible they get, except Kevin Spacey. Kevin Spacey is wickedly sarcastic and super cool in the movie. Sean Penn is the big star and center of the movie however. He is the least horrible of the guys. He is lonely and just wants to find a meaningful relationship but he can find no comfort and as the movie progresses he turns more and more to cocaine.
There are some surprising points and some casting that is very interesting, specifically a cameo by Meg Ryan.
The talking can go on a bit and it can get hard to follow at times. In fact the whole movie pretty much revolves around just talking. Not much action going on here folks, since it was adapted from a play that is understandable, it is just a bit on the boring side.
If you are into dramas with very strong characters then you might want to check this out. If you are not into drugs, drinking and sex then you might want to skip this one.
