Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie''s plot.
Foxfire (1996) might not be the best movie Angelina Jolie has been in, but its definitely worth a try. I have to admit that I didnt really care for the plot, because the moment Jolie walked in wearing motorcycle boots and leather jacket (and everyone thought it was a guy), I was watching my TV melting. I was waiting for the hot lesbian scene from that moment till the end of the movie. As the final credits rolled, I thought that my TV station just cut out the hottest parts. (Those whove seen it please tell me I was robbed and there was hot stuff and Ill go buy the real thing.)
Jolie plays Legs (she is legs, alright), a rebellious girl, whos been kicked out of high school, whose mother has died, and whos on a road for better place. She comes across some high school and what do you know, she walks in. Finds a classroom where Maddy (Hedy Burress) and Rita (Jenny Lewis) are about to have a bio experiment with frogs. Mr. Parks is trying to convince Rita that its OK to cut frogs, while Legs sits across Maddy and they start talking. Oh yeah, please, like that would ever happen.
Maddy tells Legs that Mr. Parks harasses Rita. So Legs gets involved. In fact, her involvement leads to four girls: Maddy, Rita, Violet (Sarah Rosenberg), and Goldie (Jenny Shimizu) attacking the teacher later, and being suspended. They spend their suspension days in the abandoned house. Their reputation reaches the girls in the school and one of them turns to Maddy for help. That incident leads to a series of accidents, where the girl power goes a little bit too far.
According to PlanetOut.com Jolie was inlove with Jenny Shimizu on the set of Foxfire, but I could totally see how Legs and Maddy clicked. Of course, Maddy was straight and she had a boyfriend, but she told Legs that she loved her and asked not to take it the wrong way. By that she was trying to say that she wasnt gay, but if I were Legs Id just go for it, especially after someone convinced love. There were several perfect moments for passionate love or just a quicky, like that moment in janitors room, when Legs was standing behind her, one arm embracing Maddy, another on her mouth. Hot. Commercial break. Are you sure they did not do anything?
Funny thing, after Legs showed up at school that first day, she came over to Maddys house and asked to spend a night on Maddys floor. Maddy was standing near her bed and I think it was not my imagination, but Maddys face that was screaming: No, please sleep with me in my bed. Only the next morning she bothered to find out her name. I believe some people do that with the tricks they bring home.
- I dont even know your name
- she says the next morning.
The movie ends very predictable; unfortunately without the hot lesbian scene Ive been predicting the whole thing. But hey, what can you expect, a television drama mini-series? The idea of girls fighting back and beat the crap out of all the male jerks went a little bit too far, so it had to stop. Unfortunately (once again) with the only possible solution. But hey, a whole movie with Angelina Jolie playing a lesbian is not that bad either. Unfortunately (third time already) she was only playing a lesbian and not acting on it.
I liked the general indie feel of the movie, though you probably had to trust Guinevere Turner with screenplay and Lisa Cholodenko with directing, then all of my requests wouldve been satisfied. But it was fine, nonetheless. I disliked the ensemble part of the movie, but I loved the scenes with Legs and Maddy. That duo really worked. Jolie and Burress were also the best actresses, so to speak. You see, for the most movies Jolie can just be there to be acknowledged. She doesnt really have to pull of that Gia or Girl, Interrupted performance all the time. And Burress reminds me of a girl from my deans office that I have a crush on: young and not really a good actress. The story is based on a novel by Joyce Carol Oates, which I have not read and after this movie have no intention to. Jolie is the only reason for this movie.
