Ronnie Yu's masterpiece film, "The Bride with White Hair" is a great introduction to the wild action and fast moving stories of Hong Kong cinema. Easier to follow than many Hong Kong films it tells a story about the problems of responsibility and loyalty, as well as the ever popular topic of choosing between love and family.
Leslie Cheung is as amazing as ever, truly shining in the dream-like Yu fight scenes, but the true tip of the hat must go to the ever expressive Bridgette Lin Hsing-Hsa. She outdoes herself as the wolf-girl in this movie, displaying compassion and feral pride in equal turns.
This is a great way to get people interested in Hong Kong films, it has enough of the "wire-fu" (or wuxia) stunts to set it apart as distinctly non-American, but the story line is traditional enough that a Western audience doesn't feel lost by something they can't quite grasp.
Fans of John Woo's films especially should check this out, as it gives a nice view of the period fantasy pieces which compose a substantial part of Hong Kong's film crop.
