Don't be deceived by this weird quote. Sure, this movie is made by infamously weird director, Tim Burton, but that's not all of it. I have noticed, in watching a couple of Burton movies lately, that his work is odd on the outside, but on the inside there is a deep unique meaning. In "Edward Scissorhands" that meaning is that everyone is special and, no matter how you look, people can still love you.
"Scissorhands" is an amazing movie, once you look behind the one of a kind concept. This movie is about an artificial man, Edward, created by an old scientist. The scientist dies right before Edward can completely be finished; he is missing only his hands. Instead of normal, human hands, Edward gets multiple sets of scissors for hands. With his master dead, Edward is alone in a Dracula-esque castle until a middle-aged Avon saleslady comes to the castle and brings Edward back home to her. The twist in this movie is that everyone in the community accepts Edward no questions asked, until he starts turn violent. Then, in the exciting conclusion, the town and the lady's daughter's, whom Edward falls in love with, boyfriend all turn on him.
I liked this movie because it wasn't corny. They could have had the campy kind of love movie where Edward gets hands in the end and marries the daughter, beautifully played by Winona Ryder. No. Edward gets liked for a while, but then eventually is made to retreat back to the castle, chased by a throng of middle-aged housewives.
Also, the acting was spectacular. I've gotta give kudos to Johnny Depp, who plays a very odd character. Edward has very few lines, but his body language is what makes the movie, and Depp does that perfectly. Winona Ryder also does a great job as the girl who is able to see past the scissory exterior to the nice guy underneath. Dianne Wiest also does an excellent job portraying the niave, but very caring mom.
I think that this is another classic Burton movies, and I do love Burton movies. His cinematography is so amazing and the way that he portrays the human condition is unlike anyone else.
I think that anyone could really see this movie. It's not particularly violent or has any erotic love scenes. I think that young kids might be frightened by the scissor welding guy, but anyone who can live with that can watch the movie. If you like "Scissorhands" than see some more Burton movie, especially "Sleepy Hollow", perhaps his most normal film.
