alanbweaver's Full Review: History of the Dave Clark Five by The Dave Clark F...
The Dave Clark Five were one of the last groups to re-issue a retrospective on CD so I had to live with my old vinyl LPs for a long time. Although this album came out over 4 years ago, it is one of my favorite CDs. Justice has been served (finally!) with this release.
The DC5 were constantly in competition with the Beatles back in the 60's. Both groups had good looking young men with rakish appearances. The sound of the DC5 is decidedly different than their other British counterparts, it had a hard hitting rocking edge to it. They were talented and had many hits during the mid to late 60's, too bad they have been "forgotten." They shouldn't be as they were very talented and did some great rock songs. In addition, they also covered such songs as Over and Over, putting their distinctive style on it.
Listen to songs like Anyway you Want it, Bits and Pieces, Glad All Over and you hear some good pounding on the drums and great percussion. Dave Clark was the drummer for this group and he was a darned good one.
This is a great rock and roll party type of album. All of their hits are on it. They also did a few slower ballads, Because is a wonderful song, very moving and touching.
Many B sides and some rather obscure pieces are also in the album. Although not as good as some of their hits, there are a few good pieces in there. The first CD has almost all of their early hits and that is my favorite disk to play. Disk 2 has later work, not as good, but still interesting. As each CD is nearly an hour long, it is a great value and probably the only CD you'll need of their work. To my knowledge, I don't think there are any others out there. Sure, it would be great to have a few of their other albums released on disc (2 albums would readily fit on one CD) which would be nice.
