PacManY2J's Full Review: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge [PA] by My Chemical...
I thought My Chemical Romance was just your average "screamo" band. Then I listened to them.
My prejudices were immediately removed not too far into Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. What I heard was energetic hard rock with a bit of a psychotic edge thrown in for good matter. When I think of "screamo," I think four minutes of whining with strategically placed screams to make it "hardcore." This is far from that. My Chemical Romance has no whine, and the energy stays high every second. Their mix of punk, goth, glam, and whatever the hell else they can squeeze in to create their crazy sound makes Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge one of the year's strongest rock albums.
First single I'm Not Okay (I Promise) is a fast paced track that doesn't let up. Vocalist Gerard Way speedily spits angry lines in such a way that makes every one of them fun to sing along to. This is by far the album's catchiest, though plenty of other tracks mix sloppy with catchy to provide hit-worthy tracks. Helena opens the album with one of many tremendous choruses that are powerful without being overly bombastic. Another good example is Thanks For the Venom, a brutal track with an alluring hook: "You're running after something that you'll never kill/ If this is what you want then fire at will."
So much of Three Cheers... is venomous yet it remains easily listenable throughout. To the End has a delightfully creepy intro, which gives way to a strong chorus of "Say goodbye to the hearts you break/ And all the cyanide you drank." For a few seconds, You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison sounds like a happy Billy Joel type ditty, but it soon becomes another sweet scream fest. Hang 'Em High again brings about that off-the-wall, psychotic mood, even including out-of-breath vocals and sloppy guitars at the end.
While not every track is a standout, the album's strength never diminishes for a moment. Cemetery Drive continues packing punch toward the end, and I Never Told You What I Do For A Living closes with more heavy, vicious delivery of violent lyrics. Even the minute-long Interlude, a track that could have easily been filler, proves essential as it bridges the album with an extra bit of creepiness.
Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is great music for when you're not sure what you're in the mood for, as long as it's loud. Sometimes fast and frantic, sometimes heavy and methodical, always catchy and kind of crazy, this is a different and well done rock album. Give My Chemical Romance a listen - you'll like what you hear.
