myke_ey's Full Review: Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge [PA] by My Chemical...
The first words of My chemical Romance's newest single are "if you wanted honesty" and if you want my honest opinion, if you dont own this album legally or illegally your life is seriously missing a crucial part of happiness. Although different from their debut album "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" This album is not a disapointment for those of us who have been anxiously awaiting this album.
My Chemical Romance kicks off the album with helena which i was pleased with right off the bat. It was the hard rocking that the single "I'm Not Okay" was missing. With hard pounding guitars and a unique sound Helena is a sound to be reckoned.
The next track is titled "Give 'em Hell kid" and it starts off with Gerard Way kicking the speed of the lyrics into overdrive. This is a track for those of us who love to bring the mosh.
Closely followed by "To The End" Which brings the rocking down a notch. But is made up for with more complex and interesting lyrics. (I especially enjoy the rhyming verses)
"You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison" is the fourth track and has been on my wishlist to hear since i heard rumors circulating that Bert McCracken of the used has input on it. To my delight and suprise not only did he have input but he also sings in the backround. Supposedly this song is about Gerard and Bert's friendship that blossomed during the warped tour of 2003
"I'm Not Okay" is the single released a few weeks before the release of the album and although i enjoy it, it is easily the most pop song on the album. I like the lyrics though, because its like Gerard is trying to tell you he's okay even when he's really not. But by the end of the song he just gives up and admits that he really isn't in fact okay.
"The Ghost Of You" is easily the slowest track on the album. Yet the slow tempo is a needed rest from the intense songs that preceded it.
"The Jetset Life Is Gonna kill You" was a song title that intrigued me from the get go. The song is also one that has always interested me in meaning. (i also love the way Gerard says "hotel bella muerte" so if you end up purchasing this album check that part out)
Now is the time for the sorely needed Interlude. This track is a track with eerie vocals and guitar. Not so much eerie in a Halloween way. But instead a mourning feel. Then it goes straight into the banging of drums from "Thank You For The Venom"
"Thank You For The Venom" was what i thought the album title would be after seeing "Merci pour le venin" on the booklet of "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" yet it is instead a song title. This is probably the most "moshy" song on the album mainly because of the harder drumming. Which is what makes this track stand out to listeners.
"Hang 'Em High" is the track where i think you can hear the most show tune influence. With an introduction that includes whistles that make you feel like your in a western. And with lyrics to match that feeling this is an amazing song that still baffles me after 2 months of listeing.
"It's Not a Fashion Statement, Its a Death Wish" was another title that peaked my curiousity when i read the track listing. This song probably contains my favorite guitar sound on the entire album.
"Cemetary Drive" kind of reminds me of "early sunsets over monroeville" because it starts out with a kind of singing that gerard doesnt usually use... soft singing.
And the Finale "I Never Told You What I Do For a Living" is my favorite song because of the chorus in which Gerard spits out "another knife in my hand/a stain that never comes off the sheets/clean me off/I'm so dirty babe"
Album art:Two pieces done by Gerard Way.One on the cover which contains the fabled two lovers. and the second underneath the cd which has the woman on what looks to be a hospital bed. accompanied on the opposite side by the words "The story of a man/a woman/ and the corpses of a thousand evil men"
To me what makes this band great is gerard. His singing can be so fast paced yet completely understandable. Of course the rest of the band is amazing. Yet he is what really does it for me.
An extra note for all those big fans out there. Supposedly one half of the album is about the bands experiences and the other is about the couple from "demolition lovers" that were gunned down in the desert at the end of the "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love"
