Let me get this out of the way. They're not death metal. Take a combination of the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, the Eagles, Queens of the Stone Age, and fuse them all into fifteen tracks and that's about what this album is. Josh Homme (of Queens of the Stone Age) is the drummer, referred to as "Carlo" (Carlo Von Sexron is the complete moniker) in some of the songs.
The album kicks off with "Only Want You" which sounds like a soft Elvis Presley. The drums really shine in this song. The next song, "Speaking In Tongues" is along the same lines. Next is "So Easy," which is QOTSA all the way. "Flames Go Higher" isn't really memorable. "Bad Dream Mama" has some good vocals that sound like a Stones/QOTSA cross. On "English Girl," the guitar riffs and pounding drums from Homme highlight it. "Stacks Of Money" is a good song too, with the funny line, "I got no money in my right hand, sugar cause I went on the corner where I met the wrong man, I gave him all my money for the magic in his hand." Of the remaining tracks, the absolute best are "Stuck In The Metal" (a cover), "Wastin' My Time," and the closing track, "Miss Alissa." That's not to say the others are bad, but they're less memorable.
The lyrics in this album are funny (and fun) and catchy throughout. Homme does a wonderful job on the drums. Admittedly, some of these songs are "weird." They are songs that don't seem to have a point, and that's what makes this album shine. They managed to bring in the obvious Queens of the Stone Age influence, but also have the shades of Elvis and the Rolling Stones. And if you listen closely, you might make some connection to this band's namesake, the Eagles. All in all, this album is great; definitely a gem if you like rock.
Best undiscovered band in quite a while.
