jayceerocker's Full Review: Head First by Badfinger
This Badfinger album is for Diehards Only. The Tragic Story of Badfinger has been told best By Dan Montiva In The Book "Without You The Tragic Story Of Badfinger"
This was The First Post Joey Molland Album Recorded (Although he did track 2 tunes Before Leaving these are not included on this disc, "Sing for The song" is available only on Bootlegs & the other one as well. The Title escapes me at this Moment)
The Two Pete Ham Songs are worth The price Of The 2cd set alone.
"Lay me Down" Is A pretty Power pop ditty showing the skills of Pete Ham as a writer of Hook laden songs & he was desperately trying to write a hit along the lines of "No Matter What"
"Keep Believing" is a fare thee well song written to Joey Molland who Left the band at the start of the sessions because of conflict between himself & Pete in regards to Joey's desire to have a more active roll in the creative & Financial decision making in the band. Joey's wife Cathy did everything in her powers to drive the wedge between Joey & his band mates resulting with harsh words being spoken from Joey to Pete that with Petes soon to be self inflicted death would haunt Joey to this day.
There is a third Track credited To Pete Ham as well But I would Be streching it to call it a song "Saville Road" is a little Keybaord Noodle that was thrown on the album I guess to fill up about 34 extra seconds of track time this album is already quite short even by vinyl standards.
Tommy has a pretty strong showing on this album he didn't contribute much in the way of good music on the first two Warners Brothers albums so His "Passed Fast", "Hey Mr Manager"& Most notably "Rock N Roll Contract" (Later to be re-recorded for the "Say No More" album of 1982)
his song seem like eerie predictions when taken in the context that only 4 months after these recordings wrapped up Pete would take his life By Hanging Himself in his garage studio & Tommy would follow suit less than 8 years later taking his life in the same manner as his Friend Pete,
Tommy also contributed to the song Moonshine written by Drummer Mike Gibbins along with New Badfinger member Bob Jackson
Mike as stated contributed The beautiful ballad Moonshine
as well as Back again a sweet country Flavored ditty, & Rocking' Machine an odd tune that seems very lofi long before lofi was the vogue thing to do ala Guided by Voices /apples in stereo /Olivia tremor control all of whom own a debt of gratitude to Badfinger.
Bob Jackson's major Contribution is so out of place that it seems like it came from another planet his song "Turn Around" sounds Like it was a castoff from a Journey album or something along those lines of those mid 70's prog rock bands.
the bonus tracks on the 2nd disc is a nice peek at a band creating the next album but the songs are not as strong as the Apple era Badfinger output & I would be more interested in hearing more of those someday in the future,
Badfinger recorded 2 other albums for apple that were scrapped some of those tracks appeared on the Cd of No Dice as Bonus Tracks this is stuff I'd like to hear.
over all if you are a die hard Badfinger Fan then This treasure is a must have because there just isn't nearly enough music from this amazing band with its classic line up (Pete,Tommy,Joey & Mike) & even this album with 3 of the 4 is lacking in the chemistry that those 4 had, & the 2 reunion albums are a interesting if not unsatisfying glimpse into what the future could have held for these guys if management had handled them the right way. Also odd That mike had nothing to do with those two reunion albums but I'll get to that when & if I review those two discs
