| godspeede's Full Review: Brinca II by Tatiana |
One constant in the dynamic career of Tatiana, the once upon a time Latina pop star and current La Reina de Los Ninos, is that she always strives to top her last effort. No where is this more apparent than in "Brinca II", which was released in 1996 as the followup to her stunningly successful "Brinca" from the year before. Like its predecessor,it is presented as a children's album and features interpretations of famous nursery rhymes and traditional Latino children's songs. Lavishly packaged with an extensive booklet featuring lyrics and the ever cute Tatiana mugging, it is in every way an improvement, better produced, better performed, and generally more ambitious. Included on the album are a range of tunes, including a medley of Mexican traditional dance melodies as well as my overwhelming favorite, "Amo a To", a wonderful round that could have been performed by the Crystals or some other 1960's girl's group.
However, the success of "Brinca II", and indeed of Tatiana herself in her role as a "singer of songs for children," is not just founded in her high degree of professionalism and creativity. It is also a function of the fact that she treats these songs with respect, and in doing she is effectively recognizing them for what they really are i.e. true "folk" songs that have universal appeal and meaning. Is there anyone in Western Civilization for instance that does not know the melody of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star?"(or "Estrellita" in Spanish), and who, therefore, does not counts it as a part of his or her life? Usually such songs are performed in either a silly or overly cutesy manner. Tatiana, on the other hand, in "Brinca II", recognizes no such limits and instead takes these songs that are so fundamental to our culture(s) and works them into pop masterpieces, which, at the least, are highly entertaining, and at the most, uplifting and even transcending. In this sense, Tatiana is a true creative artist, and deserves appropriate approbation and appreciation. Moreover, all possible pretensions aside, as "Brinca II" underscores, she is also an exceedingly charismatic and effective performer whose message, whether explicit or implicit, is one of joy and of love. In the end, what could be more valid than that?
