Reich Remixed was released in 1999; it was first introduced to me by one of my Composition teachers at the Hartt School of Music. The one question you're probably asking is "Who is Steve Reich ?!?"
Steve Reich is a 20th century composer of minimalist music. Other minimalist composers include Phillip Glass and John Adams. The technique that he is famous for is phase shifts - two instruments or recordings of the same music with one part a bit faster at certain measures and then played at the same time. Some of his more well-known pieces are "Music for 18 Musicians," "Piano Phase" and "Six Marimbas."
When various techno artists wanted to put together this album featuring techno re-mixes of his work, Reich was not too crazy about the idea. When he did hear the final product, though, he found it acceptable and enjoyable. It is hard these days with new "artists" (<---- using the term loosely) trying to sample old songs to make new ones, and to still have it come out well. "Reich Remixed" beats those stereotypes with great versions of "Eight Lines," "Music for 18 Musicians" and "Drumming."
Some of the featured artists include ColdCut (Music for 18 Musicians), Howie B (Eight Lines), Mantronik (Drumming), and DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid (City Life).
This CD is well worth listening to - for the techno fan or even the serious musician. You'll hear it in a whole new phase.
