dtobias's Full Review: Greatest Hits by Tiffany (Pop)
She's actually a much better vocalist than most people give her credit for.
Hearing "I Think We're Alone Now" repeatedly during the time it was popular does not give a good overview of Tiffany's vocal skills. Most Tiffany fans (and, yes, she *does* still have fans) agree that her ballads better show her talents, but many critics have never even heard them.
To dispel one myth right off the bat, no, she didn't just record covers of old hits from other artists. True, that's what "I Think We're Alone Now" was, and also "I Saw Him [Her] Standing There", but other than these two, her first album was all new music, and so was her second album (except for the title track, "Hold An Old Friend's Hand," which was a cover of an obscure Tracy Nelson song from 1974). Then she actually had a third and fourth album (also with mostly original songs), though few know it since her third ("New Inside") sold poorly, and her fourth ("Dreams Never Die") was released only in Asia.
Unfortunately, this "Greatest Hits" CD doesn't quite do her justice; while it presents a broader selection of her music than the stereotyped cover songs (including her #1 ballad "Could've Been" and her top ten hit "All This Time"), it doesn't include some of the more obscure (and better, according to many fans) songs such as the B-sides of her singles (e.g, "Ruthless" and "Heart Don't Break Tonight") or songs from her fourth (not available in the U.S.) album (e.g., "If Love Is Blind" and "Kiss The Ground"). The CD would be much better if it were to include these. Instead, they stuck mostly with her more famous singles, including only one obscurity, "Mr. Mambo," which probably deserves to remain obscure, since it's her silliest song.
The overseas-released "All The Best" Tiffany collection is better, though even it fails to include many hard-to-find Tiffany tracks that deserve a place on a "Best of Tiffany" collection.
Tiffany has been signed with Modern Records, the same label as Stevie Nicks (who has always been one of Tiffany's idols), and a new album is planned sometime in 2000.
