I'm sorry, but I can't seem to see Tool as heavy metal, not based on this album anyway. The other albums were heavier but not quite as trippy. I love this album nonetheless.
None of the songs really give me the same attachment as earlier albums. Songs like "Opiate" and "Part of Me" seem so much easier to relate to than the songs on this album. The new bassist has created a new feel for the band. I think he might actually better talent-wise, but inspiration-wise I think the old bassist was better.
For this album Tool has evolved into a heavy/mellow/trippy state. Vocals are never too overpowering, almost to the extent that it doesn't matter what is said, merely only how it is said. The songs seem to have deeper meaning than those of the earlier albums. You really have to dig to be able to relate to the lyrics this time out. Maybe as the band starts to feel a little more comfortable with the new bassist they will again start to produce more personal songs everyone can relate to. Either way, this is a great album, good played soft or loud. Tool seems to be getting a little more creative each time out which is cool, I can't stand to see a band that stands still, soon I think they will evolve into a state that nobody will understand but themselves, songs that are impossible to relate to and just leave everyone with a feeling of enjoying the song but not knowing why. I almost get that kind of feel from this album, but I often have a hard time listening to a song I can't take apart.
