Torn_Willows's Full Review: Lucky Dumpling by Moonpools & Caterpillars
The first time I ever heard Moonpools And Caterpillars was when they played an awesome music group in a movie called "Wish Upon A Star". I instantly liked the songs the movie played and saw that it was this great group. The next day I went to the local music store, and to my dismay their wasn't a copy of their album in the store. Well I continued to look, and finally came across a copy of their 1995 debut release "Lucky Dumpling". Upon arriving home, and playing the album, I was greeted with a great album, fronted by a woman with vocal power. The lead singer Kimi had an huge voice for such a tiny girl, and she new how to use it. The delivery of every song on the pop/alternative album is a great experience every time I play it.
"Lucky Dumpling" consists of 13 great tracks, with the new sound of the group making them unlike anything I had heard before. Opening up the album with the awesome song "Hear", Kimi gives a vocal explosion, appealing to the ear and the body. This song is crammed full of Kimi's own vibe and energy that it makes a good, dance around you room track. For the majority of the album, it takes a mellow turn even if some of the songs are faster, they can't touch the song "Hear". "Heaven" is a great slow song, that shows Kimi's vocals in a different light considering the rest of the album is fueled with energy. Among some of my other favorite songs on this album are the addictive "Trampling Rose" and the catchy "Koo Koo Koo".
Moonpools And Caterpillars was a great group to emerge from the shadows of 1995, and from what I have gathered they didn't make it very far from those shadows. It is a real pity that such a great album like "Lucky Dumpling" can just lay there and not reach fame. This is truly one album I will never get tired of.
