I went to the record store with a friend one day and he decided to buy this album. I didn't know who weezer was, so I just laughed because the cover of the cd. I didn't think much about them. The next day, I heard the single "Undone - The Sweater Song" and decided I needed to buy this album. Weezer is made up of lead man Rivers Cuomo, drummer Pat Wilson, guitarist Brian Bell (from 1992-1994 it was Jason Cropper, who plays in My Name Is Jonas and worked on earlier demos off the Blue Album), and at the time, bassist Matt Sharp. (Now the bassist is Scott Shriner). (Brian Bell joined the band in the earlier stages of the making of The Blue Album.)
Weezer is a rock band which reminds you of classic rock, but has a newer sound and vibe to it. Rivers once described their goal as a band was to make music where you could head bang and enjoy the music like Beavis and Butthead would, but if you wanted to, listen and analyze the music, and realize how meaningful it really is.
I'll talk a little bit about each song now:
1. My Name Is Jonas - This song starts off the album with a huge bang. When they wrote this song, they intended for it to be the intro to the cd (which it is) and to show you what weezer is and does. The lyrics don't make that much sense in this song, but it's great to sing along with. Jonas isn't really a person they know. Jonas is supposed to be Jason, back up guitarist of weezer, with the letters mixed. Here's a part of the song:
"Come sit next to me,
pour yourself some tea,
just like grandma made,
when we couldn't find sleep,
things were better than,
once but never again..."
This is one of the catchiest songs by any band and introduces weezer to the world.
2. No One Else - This song is about how Rivers, the frontman of weezer, wishes he had a girl that would care only about him. This is a song I'm learning to play on guitar now, and it's great. The melody of Rivers' voice is different than the melody of the guitar, feeling like two songs in one, making this song incredibly fun to listen to. Some lyrics:
"I want a girl who will laugh for no one else,
when I'm away she puts her makeup on the shelf"
Great melody and very catchy.
3. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here - The title shows you that this song has true meaning in it. The lyrics are very thought provoking and the solo is great. Another terrific catchy song. Lyrics include:
"The world has turned and left me here,
just where i was before you appeared,
and in your place, an empty space,
has filled the void behind my face"
One of my favorite songs.
4. Buddy Holly - The first single off the album. The music video for this song made weezer big. The video is weezer performing at Al's from Happy Days. Great video to go with a great song.
"Whoo-ee-oo I look just like Buddy Holly,
oh-oh, and you're Mary Tyler Moore,
I don't care what they say about us anyway,
I don't care about that"
A lot of radio play with a good old vibe.
5. Undone - The Sweater Song - Another single off the cd. Great song with lyrics that are not to be meant literally, but are used symbolically.
"If you want to destroy my sweater (whoa-ooh-whoa-ohh-oh)
hold this thread as i walk away, (as i walk away)
watch me unravel, i'll soon be naked (lying on the floor)
lying on the floor, i've come undone."
Many people think that this song is stupid and laugh at it because they take the lyrics literally.
6. Surf Wax America - This song seems like something the Beach Boys would play. Great guitar with lyrics that are great to sing along with.
"Sea is foamin like a bottle of beer,
the waves are coming, and i ain't got no fear,
...i'm going surfin' cuz i don't like your face,
i'm going surfin' cuz i hate the race of
Ratts that run Round and Round in the maze
I'm goin' surfin', I'm goin' surfin'!"
7. Say It Ain't So - This song is considered by many to be the best song by weezer, let alone ever. This song is actually how Rivers' father and stepfather were alcoholics and how he was becoming like them. (one part in the song is a letter that Rivers wrote to his dad. It said, "... This bottle of Stevens reawakens ancient feelings like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flooooood, yeah yeah, yeah yeah..." then it kicks off into the solo.) My favorite song. Great to sing along to.
"somebody's heine' is crowdin' my ice box,
somebody's cold one is givin' me chills,
guess i'll just close my eyes,
flip on the tele, wrestle with jimmy,
something is bubbling behind my back,
the bottle is ready to blow
say it ain't soooo,
your drug is a heart taker,
say it ain't soooo,
my love is a life taker"
Truly the best song, and the solo gets me every time.
8. In The Garage - This song starts off with a harmonica solo. Great song with great lyrics. Awesome solo, too.
"In the Garage, i feel safe,
no one cares about my ways,
in the garage where i belong,
no one heres me sing this song"
Great song, but you may not like it the first time you hear it.
9. Holiday - This song is my least favorite off the cd, but probably because I just haven't listened to this song that many times. The worst song on this cd, however, would be the best song on most other cds.
"Let's go away for awhile,
you and i, to a strange and distant land
Where they speak no word of truth
But we don't understand anyway
Holiday
far away to stay
on a Holiday
Far away Let's go today
In a Heartbeat!"
It's a great song, better to listen to it, than to read about it.
10. Only In Dreams - This 8 minute song may hypnotize you with it's catchy melody. This song is really great and should not be skipped just because it's 8 minutes long. The whole time it builds up to the great ending of the song, and of the cd.
"You can't resist her
She's in your bones
She is your marrow
And your ride home
You can't avoid her
She's in the air
In between molecules
Of Oxygen and carbon dioxide
Only in dreams
We see what it means
Reach out our hands
Hold on to hers
But when we wake
It's all been erased
And so it seems
Only in dreams"
That's a little about each song. I really have nothing to complain about with this cd. It's my favorite cd of all time. People complain that all weezer cds are short, including this one, but if you still feel the need for more weezer, there's sites where you can download their demos for previous and future cds. www.weezer.com has demos for the 5th album coming out in january or february of 2003. They don't have any demos up currently, but expect some soon. At www.riverscuomo.com, you can download the song "I Swear It's True" which was a demo for this cd, The Blue Album. Also, at www.weezerempire.com, they basically have every weezer demo ever given out, which is a lot. (Weezer usually makes and gives 75-100 songs to the fans through there official website, weezer.com.)
What I also really love about weezer is that all of their albums are different from the others. The Blue Album is mellow, Pinkerton is dark and emotional, The Green Album is happy, and Maladroit is a mixture of all three with a happy vibe yet rockin' hard at the same time. That's why weezer is my favorite band. This is a must get cd. If you're not satisfied with weezer, I recommend a band called Ozma. Rivers once said that they are more like weezer than they actually are. They're really great, too.
In conclusion, this cd is a must have. It's never really in style, but never out of style, either. This needs to be added to everyone's record collection.
