scott_howell's Full Review: Live: You Get What You Play For by REO Speedwagon
REO Speedwagon Live: You Get What You Play For" is a rock album for the ages. It's mix of original cuts and classic licks from the likes of Chuck Barry (Little Queenie) make this a delight for rockers from all decades. The songs rang from Anti-establishment anthems (Golden Country) to love ballads (Being Kind (Can Hurt Someone Sometimes)) gives this live album a diversity seldom matched.
Then there is the artistic aspects of the album. REO Speedwagon ranks as one of the hardest hitting rock bands in history. Though more recent projects have moved toward the ballad type of song, their history is one of an "in your face" sound. Gary Richrath was, and still is, one of the hottest guitarists around. The cut where he and lead singer Kevin Cronin match note for note (157 Riverside Avenue) is classic Gary! Kevin's voice is rich and ranging. Ballads and hard rock anthems are performed with equally high quality. Neil Daughty's keyboards range from the classic rock piano to the more modern synthesizer with no drop is professionalism. Alan Kratzer's drums and Gregg Philbin's bass keep the drive going.
Songs recorded on most live albums I've heard do not sound as good as their studio counterpart. This album though is different. Many cuts I found to be better than the studio version.
Though this technically is not a live album because it is a compilation of several concerts over several weeks it flows naturally as one concert. Truly a great production by Epic technicians.
If you want a live experience by one of the hottest rock bands of the last three decades this is the album/cd for you.
