I have been a subscriber for about 8 years. Rolling Stone is the only magazine I still subscribe to because when they do deliver the goods, they keep me happy. Here's a quick breakdown.
The Good
I will almost always read the feature articles even if they don't sound interesting. They usually feature an actor or musician. It is usually entertaining.
The other features are hit & miss (usually hit). They will usually take a chance and print something interesting in the mold of pop culture or sociological.
National affairs section is basically the only place I get a feel for what is going on in Washington. They make a young person like myself want to read it.
Peter Travers. Writes the movie section. Enough said. Will not cater to rolling stone's taste. RS did a profile on the director of Pearl Harbor. Then at the end of the issue he rips the movie & the director personally.
The Year End Issue & The Hot Issue: I always look forward to them.
Photography. I am not into photography, but I can admire that rolling stone does it well.
The Bad
The beginning of RS is filled with regular sections, none of which are ever interesting. All of this info can be gathered elsewhere. These include Random Notes, In The News, Concert Reviews, Industry News,etc....
The profile they do of an up and coming musician is weak.
CD reviews are bland to say the least.
More & more fashion sections, which double as ad space. Lose it.
Worst section: One-page interview. Whoever does these should be fired.
