A weekly look at the markets, finance and business, Barron’s is written for people who are serious about their money and serious about the latest financial news. It’s also a good primer for anyone who is more interested in getting involved in the stock market and doing more with their money.
I recently got myself a subscription after seeing that I could sign up for free from a fellow epinionator’s review. However, I cannot remember which review it was, so I can’t put up the link.
I don’t profess to be a market expert, but in the few short weeks I’ve already been getting Barron’s, I am more in tune with the business world and I have a better grasp of what is going on with my investments. Barron’s offers me something that magazines or business sections in newspapers lack and that’s an in-depth weekly review of the markets. You expose yourself enough to it and keep reading enough about it – and soon you keep on learning more and more. Barron’s is definitely helpful in that regard.
Barron’s is published weekly. Subscriptions can either be purchased directly from Barron’s for about $100 for a year through their toll-free number, 1-800-321-2871 or through their website, www.barrons.com. A single issue on the newsstand will cost you $3.50
The Contents
Barron’s is a cross between a weekly magazine and a weekly newspaper. Published in a tabloid newspaper format, it is broken up into several sections. These sections include the main stories, market week, mutual funds and technology week, in addition to several smaller departments and several columns.
Features
These are the main stories of each issue. These include stories on companies, different kinds of stocks, current happenings in the financial world and various views and stories on the stock markets. The latest issue includes a story on the Tyco company, the rise of luxury goods, small cap stocks, and the current rally in the stock market to name just a few. These stories are generally several pages long and are all well written and include various photographs, charts and tables to further explain each story.
Market Week
A pull out section of Barron’s, Market Week is a collection of columns on various issues in the market world and includes full tables of the various stock exchanges, charts of winners and losers in stocks in the past week and a review of commodities.
Mutual Funds
Much like Market Week, Mutual Funds includes various columns and stories on the mutual fund world and a weekly summary of all the movement of the various mutual funds.
Technology Week
Another pull out section like Market Week and Mutual Funds, Technology Week includes stories and columns on the tech world and markets and includes the statistics for the past week in tech stocks.
Departments
Like most magazines and newspapers, Barron’s contains several smaller sections that are wrapped up into the Departments section. Barron’s provides an index to significant companies that are mentioned in the issue and indexes where their statistical information and story is included in the issue. Review and Preview is a “new and notable” section of Barron’s and includes quick stories on what happened in the last week and what is likely to be happening in the next week. Follow-Up is an interesting section where various stories that ran previously in Barron’s are followed up on – was the advice they gave good, what ever happened to a company – find out in Follow-Up. Market Watch is a sampling of various opinions in the financial world on their outlook on the markets. The Classifieds are as you expect, a section of classified advertisements. Research Reports reviews companies that have recently been the subject of research reports by various investment firms – summaries of the reports are given, as is information on how to get the full report. Insider Transactions reviews various major trades made by company officials. The Mailbag is a collection of reader letters. 13D Filings is a review of the 13D Filings (a filing with the SEC whenever a company attains 5% or more position in any company’s securities) in the past week. Finally, Director of Services includes a list of various services and that Barron’s offers readers, including customer service, advertising rates, how to get annual reports, reprints and more.
That’s a lot to read every week
You better believe it, when my subscription kicked in, I was taken back at the amount of information that is included in each issue. If you read them, you will quickly bring yourself up-to-date in the world of finances and markets and you will be better off managing your own finances or taking part in managing them with a professional.
At the very least, Barron’s gives you an idea of what is happening in the financial world and with regular reading, keeps you updated to trends, news and occurrences that could be affecting your money.
More in-depth than a magazine like Money, Barron’s is a guide and an accessory for people who really want to know what is happening and how that could affect their money and investments.
Anyone with money in the markets, or who is interested in learning more about investing, researching companies, and just getting a better handle on the markets would be well served by reading Barron’s regularly. The price might be a bit steep for a subscription, but it is published weekly and like I’ve pointed out, free subscriptions are possible. It probably will be one of the best moves you can make should you be someone involved in the markets.
