Pros: extra towels
Cons: bathroom disgustingly moldy & room smelled of kitchen exhaust. staff not helpful.
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend the Maxwell. If you already have a reservation, I would ask to see the room before you check in.

My husband and I had high expectations for a wonderful stay at what appeared to be a lovely deco hotel. We were greatly disappointed. Although the room had been booked months in advance, we were given a room at the end of a dark hallway. Right beside the door was a flight of very steep and curving steps just screaming LIABILITY. We literally had to watch our step simply to enter the room! The room was very small, but decor was slightly interesting. The real PROBLEM was the bathroom. It was covered in mold and had a window that opened onto the top of the exhaust fan for the kitchen. Even with the window closed the room smelled awful. When we checked in we were to receive a rose--none was offered, but obviously available at the desk. The bellman told us he would return with ice--he never did. Room service was to be available until 11:00 pm, but, at 9:45 pm, after a 5 hour flight (with no meal) we were told there was no room service available that evening and that the restaurant closed at 10:00 pm. The following evening we called the lobby to arrange for a cab and were told to walk down and wait at the end of the street! One day, the room was not cleaned by 4:00 in the afternoon. The staff was less than friendly and did nothing to assist us. The only hospitality we were afforded came in the form of two extra towels, upon request. On the night of our arrival I overheard another guest complaining and asking for another room. The person at the desk told them that the hotel was full and that nothing else could be done. We would not recommend the Maxwell.
