I received the Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il machine in December 2000 right around the time my son was born. My in-laws gave this as a gift because during my pregnancy I had developed a real taste for ice cream.
This was a very thoughtful gift and generous too. I have since given ice cream machines to people as gifts and yet to find one that competes with this machine as far as features go. However, as far as price goes - this one has a hefty price tag (these things sell for over 400 dollars). The Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il is a top of the line dessert machine, manufactured in Italy. It comes with a one year limited warranty.
Is it worth $400 dollars?
To me, this thing is worth its weight in gold. I've made several yummy concoctions and plan on making more! I do not believe I have made $400 dollars worth of ice cream in a years time, but I could see where someone might be able to do so quite easily.
This machine is super easy to use. Unlike some other ice cream machines (like RIVAL) it has a completely self-contained freezing unit. This means all you do is dump your ingredients into the bowl and press a button. Your dessert is done in about half an hour. The machine shuts off automatically as the dessert is hardening and if it becomes too solid it turns off early. The machine uses a removable stainless steel bowl that has a snap on plastic lid. This bowl can go in the dishwasher to get cleaned. It also can be put in the freezer to keep your ice cream if you don't consume it all. The capacity of the bowl is just over a quart.
You can use the Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il to
make a variety of concoctions, including ice cream, frozen yogurt, fruit sorbets or frozen drinks. It even came with a recipe book for more than 50 different dishes. Some of them require initial preparation of a custard base, which requires cooking. While others, are literally just instructions on what to add to the bowl and press the button. I've tried several of them, but so far my favorite is the old standby of cookies and creme (with Oreos). I didn't care for the strawberry ice cream that I made but did like a peach sorbet that I made very much.
When I was a kid we had an ice cream machine and it required cranking and also rock salt. The Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il doesn't require either of these. You don't even have to add ice to it. This is a huge plus, its not messy and its easy to use.
The downside - aside from the $400 dollars (or more) price tag, is definitely the size of this machine. The Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il is a foot wide by approx 18 inches deep and about 8 inches high. It takes up a biggish chunk of my counters and does require being plugged in (though only when in use). Its too big to store in the cabinets and its also too heavy to move around much. The Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il weighs over 30 pounds. It weighs so much because of the refrigeration units I suppose, but its so heavy. Also, if it gets moved around the coolants can get "mixed", and thats bad. It came packaged with a big orange sticker on it that said to turn it on its side for 24 hours before using it due to the coolants mixing during shipping. So its not meant to be moved around.
All in all, I really like the concoctions I have made from my Simac Gelatio Magnum 4050 Il and those who I have shared with have liked it as well. I find it easy to use and fun to use as well. I personally wouldn't have paid 400 dollars for such a luxury item in my kitchen but it was a super cool gift!
