| giniroberts's Full Review: Maytag Gemini MER6769 Electric Range |
We began our quest for a new oven armed with little more than past experiences of 25 years, using both gas and electric ranges. Were we surprised to see the differences in stoves today! I thought this would be a simple decision. A large oven with a window and a light was all I thought I needed. We began by looking at the options that were available and very quickly felt a little overwhelmed at options like convection ovens and smooth tops, not to mention the fact that the dials are not dials but rather keypads on many models.
In short, I was asked what features I had to have or really wanted. Well, I wanted a large oven and large burner areas because I tend to cook for several people at once, and added that the stove of my dreams would be a double oven. This Maytag Gemini was the stove for me. The smooth top is a positive feature in that I will NEVER have to clean a burner drip pan again. I was assured that clean up is easy with proper care and use on this model. The Gemini has a double oven feature. The bottom oven is 4.0 cubic feet while the top oven is smaller and only 1.5 cubic feet.
When you think about this, it makes sense because the majority of my baking is for casseroles, cookies, biscuits and warming or keeping prepared food warm. It's very simple to pull these things from waist heighth and the oven is more efficient in that it is smaller and warms up faster. It also has a Toast Feature which I've grown to love! I have really enjoyed making Garlic Toast for dinner and even a quick toast for breakfast.
The larger oven is also nice. I found that I had ample room to bake a ham or even a turkey. While this oven is lower to the floor than conventional ovens, it is really not an issue for me. The racks slide easily and there is even an option to add another smaller rack so that you can cook a casserole and a larger dish at the same time!
A great benefit to this model is that I have the opportunity to set cook start-times and cook end-times, making managing my household a breeze. Setting the automatic timers was not difficult, once I'd read up on the instructions and did a trial start. Imagine, putting in a frozen pie or rolls in the top oven and a pot roast in the lower oven and going to a school concert. Your ovens turn on at the time you determine and turn off at the time you have set, so that your meal is perfectly cooked in your absence. I LOVE this!
My husband likes the dual heating elements that alternate, so that food is evenly cooked. I believe there are 6 points to radiate heat evenly.
This model has a self cleaning feature and is even able to be programmed to cook a little faster or a little slower if you need to adjust it. This saves you from calling a serviceman out to adjust it.
It took me a little while to get used to the keypad and setting the functions on the ovens, but after using it two days, I feel very comfortable with the entire procedure. The glass top has been easy to clean and looks so pretty when it's clean and polished. I feel that I have the oven of my dreams and I'm pleased with the value and the eveness of cooking. I did use this stove as an excuse to buy some new cookware. It is recommended that only cookware with straight bottoms, rather than beveled bottoms be used. I called the Maytag Support Line prior to buying this range and asked why this was necessary. He explained that this is because of the glass cooktop. If your pots are beveled and extend more than an inch beyond the burner, and you cook at high heat, you risk melting the glass top. Since I also like to can food, I was concerned that I would not be able to do this anymore, but he told me that Presto makes a cooker canner that is more than adequate and I plan to purchase that with the Gift Card I will receive as a rebate for purchasing during the holidays! So, I'm a happy cooker now.
