| tunagimp's Full Review: Maytag MER6750 Electric Range |
I purchased this Range in May 2003 to replace a highly unsatisfactory Jenn-Air slide-in (See my Epinions review of the Jenn-Air SCE30600).
The MER6750 looks and performs much like your normal mid-price, glass-top four-burner (with a double element, right front), self-cleaning electric range with a few exceptions. The major one of these is what gives the "Accelis 2X" is name, the low-power Microwave "Magnatron Tube." With a name straight outta '50's Sci-Fi, you know it's going to be an interesting cooking experience, and it was, as soon as I had a DOA front burner replaced by my "Maytag Authorized" Appliance repair fellows. (More about that later).
The oven control panel is the first place you begin to see the differences in this Maytag. You are given several options to use the "Speed Bake" feature, these include "Main Dishes", "Baked Goods", "Defrost" (a really good thing) and "Frozen Dinners." The thing really does cook quickly. I get oven-baked BBQ Chicken in around 20 minutes. You can defrost and speed bake the Thanksgiving Turkey in the same oven, twice as fast! It also has a spiffy feature called "Quick Preheat" which uses the range's low power Microwave energy to preheat the oven twice as fast (I say faster) than a regular range.
When you press those buttons, you can tell some serious magic is happening. Because the baking cycle starts with this high-voltage sounding "THUNK" and the control panel beings to display this vibrating icon. And it did this diligently for about 17 months until one day it decided to stop. That's it, just stop. After about two minutes, it started displaying "Power Interruption" and made you restart the range. "Not Again," thought I, cursing the Maytag Repairman and his children. This range has a version of an "extended warranty," standard. Year one is full parts and labor, years two though five cover all electronics parts, you pay labor. The good news is Maytag charges a flat fee of $119 to come out, regardless of the labor involved, a really good deal. So I called, made an appointment for a week out, unplugged the range and took the back off.
Sparing you the details of my five day investigation, it turns out that our May '03 Repair was done incorrectly. Seems the fellow routed the wiring on the wrong side of a heat shield causing the wiring to fray and eventually fail. I might add that this was discovered and repaired by me. The quality of the Maquiladora construction is poor and the sheet metal cuts on my hands have yet to heal.
Prior to encountering the Jenn-Air/Maytag line of Electric Ranges, I thought a Range was this big clunky thing you bought and it lasted until you had Grandkids. Ah, but that was before the advent of Modern Technology!
I look forward to more cooking adventures with this "Space Age" range, which, I might add, is now discontinued. This technology, when it works, it superb, I don't know why it was never used in more products, but I have I feeling I'm going to find out.
